Bach 78 Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island

Step back in time to a more leisurely age and holiday in a historic Rangitoto bach. Book to stay overnight on Auckland’s iconic volcanic island.

Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay near the Islington Bay wharf, and Motutapu Island. The bach is a 1 and a ½ hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf or a 2 and a ½ hour kayak from Auckland.

Since the 1920s the baches on Rangitoto have been available to only a few lucky families but now you can join them. Bach 78 has been lovingly restored with the addition of modern bedding, cooking and toilet facilities. Supplied in the kitchen to use are utensils, pots, pans and a 12 volt chilly bin to keep your food cool.

Bach 78 is located directly opposite the Islington Bay Wharf on Rangitoto Island. It has 2 bedrooms, gas cooker, BBQ, solar powered lights and a chemical toilet.

There is a network of well-defined walking tracks giving access to the volcanic features of Rangitoto and the native bush restoration and archaeological sites on Motutapu. The views from the summit of Rangitoto is a must do feature of time spent on the island. Both islands are pest free and you will see native birds and other native wildlife often absent on the mainland.

While the rocky shoreline of Rangitoto can make swimming difficult the sandy beaches of Motutapu are just a short walk away.

Getting there;
Bach 78 is located at Islington Bay on Rangitototo Island. Access to Rangitoto wharf is available from Fullers360 Ferry (https://www.fullers.co.nz/timetables-and-fares), Auckland Sea Shuttle (0508 SEA SHUTTLE), or private boat. Please note that Islington Bay is a1.5 hour walk from Rangitoto Wharf where Fullers usually berth or a 2 minute stroll from Islington Bay Wharf.

Know before you go;
- Rangitoto Island is pest free – No pets are allowed
- Fullers ferry only operates Friday, Saturday and Sunday through winter.
- There are no shops on Rangitoto Island
- There is no hot running water at the bach
- There are no public rubbish bins on Rangitoto
- Check in is at midday. Check out is 10am
- Travel arrangements must be made separately.
- Access is by Fullers360 Ferry (please refer to their website for timetables to/from Rangitoto Island), Auckland Sea Shuttle or private boat.

Special conditions:
The Department of Conversations biosecurity rules apply.

Small animals, ants, rainbow skinks and weeds or exotic seeds are the biggest threats to the pest-free status of our special islands. Gear that has been in the garage or even stored in the house could be hiding rodents, skinks, insects and seeds. Please help by completing the DOC Biosecurity checklist prior to your arrive on the island.

Extras:
Cleaning (Optional, $100.00 cash per booking). Please arrange this service directly with the Island Bach Manager. NOTE: If there are back-to-back bookings, in more than one bach, it may not be possible for the Island Host to offer this service. If the cleaning service is not available, you are expected to leave the bach in a clean and tidy condition.

As part of your booking you are expected to bring: your own linen, sleeping bag, pillowcase & towel.
Make yourself comfortable in this cottage, featuring a kitchen with a refrigerator and a stovetop. There's a private patio. Conveniences include a coffee/tea maker, and housekeeping is provided on request.
Take in the views from a garden and make use of amenities such as barbecue grills.

Bach 78
Check in was super simple. Quincy was very friendly helpful and lovely to chat to about Rangitoto and the historical bachs on the island. The bach was exactly as described and as photographed. Such a lovely quaint place to stay. Highly recommend for a getaway from it all.

Paradise on your doorstep
We had an amazing stay at Islington Bay. Compared to camping or tramping we felt spoilt! The bach is amazing and so well cared for. Beds were comfy, and there were even lights and gas too! Perfect spot for walking out around Rangitoto and Motu Tapu. Loved our walk to Wreck Bay. Counted 20 different birds while we there including a family of 6 saddlebacks. Also a huge stingray in the bay. Even got some wharf jumping in. Thanks so much Quincy for your manaaki, we felt right at home and would love to return. And so close to home, still amazed it's not fully booked out for years ahead! Thank you.

A world away just around the corner
We had two nights in the batch during July, I didn't notice the no heating aspect of the listing but it wasn't too bad in the end. Mugs of milo and warm clothes, plus the hot water bottles supplied, stashed inside our sleeping bags for bedtime and it was completely ok. Such a great spot so close to auckland but you really feel like you have gotten away and out of Auckland.

Rangitoto Magic
This is a truly special place, steeped in natural and human history. Amazing plant life, stunning bird life and fun fishing. Entering this house is like stepping back into a simpler, quieter time, but there is still everything you need. Quincy is the consummate host, communicative, friendly and chill. Thanks so much for sharing this piece of Aotearoa old world goodness with us.

A wonderful overnight stay at bach 78. Fantastic location, we were incredibly lucky with the weather, fish jumping outside the house, swimming off the wharf in May, stargazing at night and a great short hike there and back from the ferry - magic!!

We loved staying here! It really is a gem of a place and such a wonderful opportunity to experience. Steph and Quincy were so kind in showing us around. Of course it is rustic, but if you are expecting that then you’ll have a great time. A rare treat

An Amazing One-Night Getaway
We had such an incredible time staying at this bach. The location is nice and quiet, close to a fantastic snorkel spot, Motutapu island, and the beautiful coastal track. I would have spent a whole week there if I could! Quincy and Stephanie were fantastic, lovely, and helpful hosts. One of the coolest places I've ever stayed.
