Thank goodness for breakfast !
The saving grace at this poorly maintained and slightly dilapidated property was its Great British breakfast. With the reception unstaffed on arrival I had to run the gauntlet of a crowded and noisy "locals" bar which suddenly fell silent when this "stranger" strode through the door. One of the bar staff checked me into a room at the far reaches of the upstairs corridors. The room was small and cramped, but the bed linen was clean if a bit small for an average height sleeper. The bathroom (including toilet) was in what, in the past, must have served as a cupboard and as a result the only clothes hanging space was on a wall-hook. Wifi was poor even though the corridor was littered with boosters, but no worries next door's use of the tv was loud enough to keep me entertained. Car parking was in the street, unprotected, and was only useable as I was there after 6.30 and leaving before 8.30 next day. Breakfast was a facesaver, a nice and freshly cooked plate of food, served with a friendly smile in a clean breakfast room, with specially printed placemats telling the history of the hotel. Shame the rest of the building didn't live up to its noble past.
