The place is beautifully historic (very thin walls, everything creaks, no aircon ) full of charm and that includes the staff.
There was only a fabric blind in my room, which was open on arrival, lying on my bed for a nap I discover someone peering at me from across the courtyard, needless to say, the blind stayed down from then on, which made the room dark and claustrophobic!
I dined at the Grill where I was expecting a superb experience, the steak certainly was great, I switched out chips for mash, which was a mistake, instead of a fluffy cloud I got a solid mass of piped cement. This was accompanied by a small amount of watercress which for the overall price was underwhelming to say the least.
Breakfast was generally good, but when you wait 10-15 minutes for your meal, you don’t expect solid poached eggs which appear to have been pre- prepared several days ago, shame.
The pool area is lovely, I had a great swim, sadly the jacuzzi was blocked by the same loud 2 couples each morning, for at least 50 minutes which was excruciating, I think a polite sign requesting to consider other guests in terms of noise and duration might be required.
Overall I’ve always held this hotel in great esteem, but I feel this has been rather dented after this weekend, such a shame.
