House between coast, lake + mountains: every window view is a Connemara highlight!

"A stranger is a friend
you haven't met yet "...

"A stranger is a friend
that you don't know yet ... "
Irish saying

The Calla School House was built over 100 years ago and served as a village school in Ballyconneely until the 1970s. Then the house was expanded and used privately; bought, refurbished and completely renovated by us in 2013, taking into account the old structures.
The location of the house on the 'Wild Atlantic Way' is unique: right on the coast, framed by the 'bog', (moor), a lake and mountains: pure Connemara! Nearby Clifden, Connemara’s capital with many restaurants and shopping, and Roundstone, one of the prettiest coastal towns in Ireland.
The coast offers many of the most beautiful beaches of Connemara with different characters in the surrounding area. Calla Beach can be reached on foot in 10 minutes. Our attraction: hike to the uninhabited small island (Inis Stavros) at low tide :)
The house has 3 bedrooms, 1 living and dining room, a large kitchen, 1 bathroom with shower and two sinks. The glazed veranda offers incomparable views over Maumeen Lake, in which the sky is reflected, on the moor, in which sheep and horses graze, and on the mountain range of the Twelve Bens.
The house is equipped with a new gas central heating / hot water, the consumption of which can be individually controlled with a timer.
The energy costs (minus the first € 10.00) will be charged separately after meter reading and deducted from the deposit after departure.
The house is surrounded by a garden of about 2000 square meters, which has various terraces with seating and small tables. There is also a picnic table. In the so-called "Swimming pool"
can be sheltered from the wind with a view of the mountains and Maumeen Lake!

Let us speak to one of our guests:
".... Calla Old School House is not really a holiday home. Rather, it is a home that is borrowed from the owner for a week or more. And it also feels like being at home. The drawers are full of useful things, scotch tape, writing utensils, sewing tools, tools, hand mixers, baking dishes etc. The house offers plenty of space: a large living room, dining room and kitchen, bathroom, three bedrooms and a winter garden. In addition, it is extremely tasteful and furnished with great attention to detail. Not to forget the beautiful garden, which even has a seat and garden furniture, is an absolute rarity for Ireland, since gravel places around the house actually dominate here. Everything corresponds to German standards, dishwasher, coffee machine, central heating, warm water etc. Not to forget the wonderful little details such as. B. the electric blanket in the master bedroom. We also enjoyed the fireplace, although we still haven't figured out how to make peat briquettes burn. With us they just smoldered. We enjoyed living, reading, cooking, sitting in the garden in the sun, watching the sunset, eating in the winter garden, collecting shells on the beach, visiting the island at low tide and listening to the wind. Anyone who misses the Internet here can only be a teenage addict - like our son. But even he had to admit that the house is just great ..... "
Make yourself comfortable in this vacation home, which features a fireplace. There's a private balcony or patio. A kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, an oven, and a stovetop. Complimentary wireless internet access keeps you connected, and a DVD player is provided for your entertainment.
Take in the views from a terrace and a garden and make use of amenities such as barbecue grills.
Guests will find features like internet access and onsite parking.

The Best
This was just a marvelous place to stay. The house was a great location and equipped with you need. All the information we received was spot on accurate. We had great Irish weather - sunny some days, windy and rainy others. The School House was like a safe harbor. Plenty to do in the area - hiking, shopping, great food at local restaurants, convenient grocery shopping. Thanks to the owners. A great memory.

Paradise
We loved our stay in Callow which is the best location in Connemara. The information provided by the hosts was great and helped us plan our walks and activities every day. The local beach is beautiful and quiet and great for a swim. At low tide you can walk to the island and explore which the kids loved. The mountain & sea views from every part of the house are spectacular and there are nice seating areas dotted all over the gardens to enjoy.

Beautiful Location!
Views are fantastic. The house is comfortable and neat as a pin. Located across from ocean, but access is down the road. Lake view behind the house is serene, but also have to drive for access. Market and pub a short drive away. Great leaping off point for Connemara activities.

Wonderful stay
We had a great time staying at the Calla School House. It's a very comfortable and spacious home away from home. The views are fantastic; both during the day and during the evening. We were able to relax properly and that is what a holiday is about for us. We walked to Calla beach and visited quite a few other local beaches, rock pooling and we did some great walks. We would love to visit again sometime in the summer; although the weather was actually very good. It did rain, but mostly in the evenings and during the nights. A couple of showers but lots of sunshine as well. Unfortunately, our son left his phone at the house when we left.. However, Gabriele and Klaudia were so good about this. They directly offered to send it back to our home in England. Their communication was excellent throughout. I can recommend Calla School House wholeheartedly!

Comfortable and characterful
Sunrises over a lake, sunsets over the sea, dark quiet nights. Comfortable beds, good heating, well-equipped kitchen (the dishwasher was replaced during our stay). Lovely calm decor, seashore finds everywhere around the place, conservatory and secluded garden out back One quirk to be aware of is that the TV is internet only, no terrestrial or satellite. If you have apps on your phone you can 'mirror' to it, which is what we did; it's not hard to set up, just be prepared. And the plumbing is no flushing of paper, so pretend you're on a holiday in the Mediterranean countries where that is standard, the weather might even oblige! We had some gorgeous days even at the end of September. Communication was great throughout.

Family holiday in Connemara
Great house and location for our family of four (2 teenage boys). The house is gorgeous, best rental we've ever stayed in. It has everything you'll need and is very comfortable. Beautiful beaches all along the nearby coastline. We swam every day, mostly at Calla beach, only 10 minute walk away. Our boys enjoyed using the bicycles to cycle to the shop in nearby Ballyconneely. Highly recommend Keoghs bar/restaurant in Ballyconneely where you will find great food, welcoming staff and a relaxed atmosphere. We fell in love with Connemara and will definitely be back xx ❤️

A home away from home
We have been to the old school house before in summer with the family and tried but failed a few other times to book it but missed out. This was our first winter visit. We will be back again.. this is less the formula holiday home that can be rented anywhere, and so mischievous more this is a home for holidays! There is a warmth and generosity to the place that relaxes and comforts you and all that in the most wonderful Connemara. The CD collection is all worth a listen! I will be booking my trip for next winter this week!

A slice of Irish heaven
My wife and I can’t even begin to describe how beautiful the Calla house was or amazing the stunning vistas are that surround it. Hand and Gabi have opened their home for others to share and they have forgotten nothing. I had to use my survival skills to light the turf briquettes but once I figured it out, I could light an awesome fire in one match. Our stay was magical, mystical, and perfect. We will be back!!

Magic venue
The property was all I expected and much more. The views were wonderful on every side of the house, and thoughtful seating areas abound outside. Details about the house and it’s environs are carefully put together by the Owners and the magic beach just a ten minute walk away was one of my favorite spots in the area. I loved being there.

We found the property just as it was described and clear instructions were given as to how to utilize appliances and find our way around. The house is a home and as such was renovated and equipped with care and love. Clearly the owners have fallen in love with Connemara and all things Irish. It was a pleasure to enjoy this much loved spot on the Irish coast. Louise and Conor. Co Tipperary

From the moment we stepped into the property we fell in love. Impeccably clean, spacious and views out every window. Love all the decorations that the owners have placed around the house. Everything you need or can think of is in the house it all ran very smoothly! The location beside the beach was just wonderful, our children had so much fun exploring the island and swimming in the Crystal clear sea. Look forward to coming back again! Thank you!

This house is in such a beautiful location with the most stunning views all around. Watching the sun set over the sea was something special. A gem on a superb location
Old Calla School House ( June 17th –June 24th 2017) When we entered Old Calla School House we did feel welcome straight away! The atmosphere, the smell, the flowers is the vase, the vieuw at the Atlantic and in the back on some of the Twelve Pins, everything was just right for a lovely week at the Connemara! And we did enjoy every minute of that week in this lovely house at this very special place. Our hosts left enough tourist information to keep us busy. Also enough peace in this fully equipped house (really nothing missing!) and the environment to sit outside just enjoying the view and the lovely garden. We do miss our every day walk to the beach ( only ten minutes). Great fun walking at low tide across the beach to the isle where only sheep are living. Almost every evening we made a real peat fire in the living room. You get used to this peculiar smell and that we also miss. One solution: we have to go back to Old Calla School House along the Wild Atlantic Way again!! Theo and Corinne
