The ancient village of Calvanico is located in the heart of the Apennines a few kilometers north from Salerno. It 's handy “base-camp” where you can avoid the hustle and bustle of the city, but where at the same time, you can easily reach the many important tourist sites and the marine archaeological region of Campania, in southern Italy: it takes only 20 minutes to get to the beaches and the port of Salerno, and then go to Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Ischia and Sorrento, 45 minutes to get to Naples, 35 minutes to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius for 50 minutes, 60 minutes to go to Paestum and then continue to the Cilento National park area, where you can easily arrange for excursions even one day, returning home in the evening and so be able to visit in a few days all the major tourist sites in the region.
Calvanico is situated on the slopes of the mountains Picentini, about 500 meters above sea level and more precisely at the base of the slopes of Pizzo San Michele. It is full of chestnut trees and walking paths that offer many trails for nature walks , among which the most popular are those that lead to the peaks of Mt Picentini, the old mills, and one that leads to the chapel of Our Lady of Loreto.
In close proximity ( 2 Km) is the natural area "Frassineto" with its trees of various kinds, with paths and trails. It’s easy to move through even for children. The park is also equipped with a picnic area prepared with built-in barbecue and a children's playground. Among the many cultural events on offer, there are craft shows and impromptu painting exhibitions organized by Proloco. There are many recreational events, such as religious holidays and festivals of which the highlights are represented by the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto on 5 August and the Chestnut Festival in Autumn. The patron saint of Calvanico is Saint Michael the Archangel, which is celebrated on 8 May with a picturesque evening stroll along the slopes of Monte San Michele to reach the peak and the shrine dedicated to him.
