For a hostel, the rooms were cozy, modern designed, and well maintained. Showers had plenty of hot water and in good shape Fair sized lockers, too. My only disappointment was the lack of a "common area" to sit and relax. There is no such area. On the ground floor in the back near the elevators there appeared to be a nice lounge.... just like the promo picture used for the property. After several minutes in on a cozy couch in this room, I was approached and asked if I wanted a menu. After I declined, I was told if I didn't order I had to leave. Bait and switch to think there's a nice place to relax at a hostel, only to find out it's an unmarked commercial restaurant with rules against "loitering".

Rooms are perfect, simple, and homey. The shower is perfect. Staff is always friendly & helpful. The location is within walking distance of many landmarks & fabulous eats.

If you are aware there is no common area or kitchen, and are ok with that- this place is for you. Pros- comfy beds, bathroom in the quads, good shower pressure & hot water, location is in the heart of things, curtains & chargers in each bed. Definitively cant beat for the price if you want to be centrally located and just need a place to rest your head.

The Freehand is in an excellent location--proximity to restaurants, transit, and shopping is great. Staff was friendly and our room was clean. As long as you remember that it's essentially a hostel you'll have a great stay! (And it's one of the better hostels I've been to)

We had a great one night stay at the Freehand! The staff were amazing at check in and check out! The room we had was very small but super cozy and better than the larger rooms we’ve stayed in at other hotels. No mini fridge or microwave so plan accordingly. We had Matthew check us in and he was so friendly and personable and very sweet to my 2 year old who was having a procedure at Luries down the street. We’ll definitely be staying again soon!

Our room was clean, except for the dried out contact lens that was on the nightstand when we arrived. The hotel overall had a good vibe and atmosphere. The only thing I would change is, it would be nice if there was a little convenience store in the hotel to buy a razor or a bottle of water.

The staff was very accommodating at the front desk. I wish the breakfast at the restaurant was better. Cold and cheap ingredients. Eggs looked like they were the cheapest you could get as the yolks were yellow, not orange. Cold potatoes that were definitely previously frozen. Only white bread available. The beds were comfortable, but a bit tight if more than one person was trying to move around the room. A minifridge/kitchenette would be helpful for people staying longer than one night.

Great location and value*
Great location and bargain if willing to share a room with strangers/ new friends. Clean, hip, yet quiet. Super dark and dreary color scheme for my liking, but generally a great place to stay and I would choose to stay here again, especially if traveling solo. Parking is “available” and guidance (with QR code) provided at the front desk for their recommended site for $49/24 hrs. I used the nearest parking garage on my own (through SpotHero app) and it was $30/24 hrs. The hostel/ shared set-up was helpful (especially financially), but there are certain things not communicated at check-in…such as how check-in and cleaning works if staying more than one night and roommates are checking out or checking in. I was not feeling well and was trying to rest/ sleep during this process unknowingly and was taken by surprise by a cleaning crew cleaning and talking at full conversation volume and just cleaning around me basically. I did not expect them to tiptoe around or anything…just taken by surprise and thought they could have been slightly more considerate (conversation volume at a 7 versus a 10, etc).

The vibe at Freehand was like none other I've ever stayed in before. Very unique. Always smelled great! Lots of plants and boho decor. The staff was super friendly and helpful with any questions we had. We went to Chicago to see a concert at Soldier Field. Thanks to the staff at the desk, we easily found transportation to and from the venue.
