Donaho House

The space

Our home is situated on 1 1/2 acres in the historic town of McCarthy with spectacular views of the Kennicott Glacier and the Wrangell Mountains. Enjoy all the comforts of home in this spacious, modern home with 3 bedrooms, a loft, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, sunroom, and a deck with a view. Our solar electric system provides the power for radiant in floor heat, lighting, washer and dryer, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The perfect place for family (sleeps 10 and kids under 12 no extra guest fee) and friends to experience all that Wrangell-St. Elias National Park has to offer.

Attractions

It’s a short walk to “downtown” McCarthy where you’ll find great restaurants/bars, guide services, flightseeing tours, a general store and a scheduled shuttle service. Enjoy a stroll around town to get a feel for this historic town and while your at it, stop by the local museum to learn the history and see all of the photos from the early days. You can sign up for a day rafting trip, a fly out day trip to a remote airstrip, or take one of many flightseeing trips available. Hop on the shuttle to visit the nearby (5 miles) town of Kennicott. Spend the day exploring the National Historic Landmark on your own or book a guided glacier hike or ice climbing. You can take a mine building tour or enjoy a great lunch at one of the restaurants in Kennicott. Visit the gift shop or just grab a beer or coffee and take in the spectacular views.

How to get here

If arriving by road, you will park at the fee based parking lot at the end of the McCarthy Road next to the west end of the footbridge. It is a short walk to the east end of the bridge where we will meet you and transport you and your gear the 1/2 mile to Donaho House. There is a luggage cart at the bridge for public use. We ask that you call from Chitina to let us know you are on schedule. That will ensure a timely pickup at the footbridge. At checkout you will be transported back to the footbridge for departure.

Drive times to McCarthy from:
Anchorage - 7-8 hours (307 miles)
Valdez -5-6 hours (180 miles)
Fairbanks -8-9 hours (370 miles)
Glennallen - 3-4 hours (127 miles)
Chitina - 2-3 hours (*60 mile gravel road. Conditions vary. Take your time).
There are typically 2 lane highways in Alaska so drive times may be longer than you’re used to. Be aware that Moose and Caribou can create a driving hazard along roads in Alaska.

If arriving by air we will pick you up at the McCarthy Airport. Wrangell Mountain Air offers air transportation from Anchorage and scheduled flights from Chitina which includes flightseeing. (Flying from Chitina allows you to avoid the 2+ hour drive on the McCarthy Road and get some spectacular views of the park from the air).

Other things to note

The house has a full kitchen including a refrigerator/freezer, a 5 burner gas stove with oven, a dishwasher, pots and pans, dishes, silverware and knives. Everything you need to cook a great meal. If you don’t care to cook there is a fine dining establishment and 2 restaurants/bars in McCarthy and two in Kennicott. There are also 2 espresso shops in town. They all offer great food and dynamite coffee.

McCarthy Mercantile is a short walk from the house and stocks basic food including fresh veggies and frozen meats. They also offer a limited selection of beer, wine and spirits. Stop by for some ice cream on one of our hot summer days!

There are shuttle services available that run from the footbridge, Kennicott and the airport from 8:30am to 7pm. Check for current rates and schedules.

Wrangell Mountain Air has an office in town where you can book air transportation, flightseeing of the park and fly-in backcountry adventures. They can fly you from Chitina on their scheduled flight which includes flightseeing along the way. We highly recommend this as a way to arrive. It’s a great value for the money and avoids the drive on the McCarthy road. See their website for info and pricing.

This was our 3rd stop on our almost 2 week vacation with two other families. This home was amazing, stunning view, beautiful home and craftsman’s ship, great location with quick walk to town. Kitchen fully stocked, host communication was easy and quick. It’s a special place and highly recommend staying. I hope we will be back someday.

Fit for a princess!
Donaho House is amazing and Kelly & Natalie are the best hosts you could imagine. The location is perfect and the house is truly fit for a princess. I have camped numerous times and stayed in rustic cabins while in McCarthy. However, after staying at Donaho House I just can't imagine not having a warm home, hot shower, washer/dryer, cozy bed, and a nice glass of wine to return to. The home really is the best place in town to stay.

Absolutely AMAZING!!!
All I can say is WOW! I went to one of the most remote towns in Alaska and stayed in the nicest VRBO ever! Kelly was an amazing host as a long time resident of McCarthy. He picked us and all of our gear up at the footbridge and drove us to the house. The house itself is beautiful and very well laid out with 1 main floor bedroom and a full bath and 2 large bedrooms upstairs with 2 queen sized beds, a daybed and 1 futon. Even the futon is really high quality and all beds have memory foam mattresses. The furnishings in the home are of a very high quality and super comfortable. The kitchen is wonderful with a huge gas range, tons of counter space, and has quality cookware for preparing meals. The side deck has a gas grill that is easy to use and looks brand new. The views from the dining room and living room are spectacular. I could not think of a single negative thing to say about this property. It is about a 5-7 minute walk from the restaurants and shuttle pickup. The complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch. If I am ever back in McCarthy I would only stay in this home. Thanks Kelly for your hospitality!

Stunning Retreat in McCarthy!
What a place this is! We absolutely loved our stay at this stunning home in the beautiful McCarthy. We were very lucky to book this gorgeous accommodation, there isn’t a house like it in the area. It’s beautifully decorated, comfy, cosy and very spacious. The views of the mountains from the huge windows are unbeatable. On our first night we saw a momma moose and her baby! Kelly was very kind and helpful and we did a lot of his recommendations. We ate at The Potato and The New Golden Saloon, which were both great. We got the shuttle to Kennicott and explored the historical mine and did a couple of the hikes. Don’t miss the Root Glacier walk! This place really is an amazing retreat. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back or recommend to others. Thank you again for hosting us Kelly, we had a wonderful time. 😊

Fantastic beyond listing
This property was beautiful, clean, and in an ideal location! From the communication to the assistance the owner exceeded all of our expectations! Great fun being there at the end of the season with local restaurants using up inventory and packing up. Great Experience! Windows were like paintings with a Northern Lights show on our last night. Just wow!

This is the best place in Mcarthy!!
This house is everything you can ask for - beautiful mountain and glacier views from the deck and dining area. It is well worth the money. Kitchen is equipped with everything we needed to cook for our family of 5 (best to do grocery shopping in Glenallen). We drove the Mcarthy road and lost cellular reception before Chitina, but called Kelly when we got to the footbridge in Mcarthy and he was already there waiting for us. He was super helpful with helping us book a rafting trip and other hiking recommendation. Mcarthy is a gem and well worth the drive.

Best I Have Stayed At!!
Every once in a while you find a diamond where you did not think there was any and this one is a huge diamond. Kelly and Natalie are the best hosts we have dealt with. So responsive and so helpful. They are the salt of the earth. You add that to how magnificent their rental is and you have a perfect vacation in store for you. Let's first talk about the location. As some might know McCarthy is out there and does not have many options when it comes to the comforts of home, like running water, hot showers, and gas cooktop to mention a few. This rental had it all and then some. The rental is beyond inviting. You feel so much at home and comfortable the moment you walk in. You are enveloped in a spectacular wooden cabin with multi-million dollar views of glaciers from your back door, back deck, and upper master room. The rental is stocked with all of the necessary items one might need. It is beyond perfect. One of the other great things about this rental is that you are so close to everything. Yes McCarthy is not that big but being only 3 to 4 minutes walking distance from downtown McCarthy, the shuttle, and the great restaurants this rental is perfectly located. If you have the chance to stay at this rental you will not be disappointed, but will feel as though you won the lottery. Thank you again for the most magnificent chance to stay at your rental. We are grateful for the opportunity!
