Rhiw Felen is a beautiful, secluded farmhouse located near the source of the River Mawddach. A large, traditionally built stone house, it combines its 150 year old heritage - some slate floors, wood burners, wooden walls - with all the expected contemporary facilities - 2 fully equipped bathrooms, dishwasher and washing machine, Calor gas Aga.
LOCAL AREA
It sits on the public road for easy access and is surrounded by some of the best walking country in Eryri, as we now call Snowdonia. You walk in to this every time you come out of the front door. The atmosphere inside is more family home than boutique. The house is fully equipped and spacious with a large living room/kitchen and a separate parlour/dining room with a large dining table and benches for up to 12 people, as well as a couch and armchairs for enjoying the wood burner.
HOUSE LAYOUT
There are 3 bedrooms with double beds, a bedroom with bunks and a single bed and a sleeping loft with 2 single beds. Accessible from an outside staircase at the back of the house is a large room with a panoramic view down the valley, suitable for activities - it has a table tennis table - and relaxing/hanging out.
UNPLUGGED TRANQUILITY
There is currently no mobile signal in the valley. The house has a landline payphone but no internet connection - over the years, our guests have told us they value getting away from the everyday and prefer the place without internet access. The cafe at T H Roberts in Dolgellau has free wifi and is a big place where there is always space and is an essential part of a stay at Rhiw Felen for their cakes and Welsh rarebit.
What everyone feels when staying here is the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful spot seeping into them and the pressures and tensions of normal life disappearing.
ACTIVITIES
Of course, there is lots to do for those who prefer a more activity filled holiday - walking, mountain climbing and swimming in the river are all accessible from the house and the Coed y Brenin mountian bike trails are a mile and a half away. The Coed y Brenin visitor centre when you can hire bikes and follow bike and walking trails through the forest is 15 mins drive.
A host of attractions and activities locally for children of all ages as well as culture and history seekers are within an hour's drive - The Ffestiniog Railway, Llechwedd Caverns, Torrent Walk, Barmouth beach, Harlech Castle and many more!
SPECIAL QUIRKS
It is important that guests know we do not provide bedding or towels, you have to bring them with you. This is reflected in the price.
NB There are no fences around the fields in the valley so dogs must be under control at all times. The farmer has made it clear that he cannot guarantee the safety of any dog worrying the sheep
