Holiday In El Salvador

You’ve always loved an underdog, whether you’re blubbering over the tale of Oliver Twist or watching a heartwarming film about the ultimate sports comeback (Rudy! Rudy!).

How about supporting an underrated destination on your next holiday? El Salvador may not have the name recognition of its neighbours (we’re looking at you, Guatemala), but you’re bound to have the time of your life trekking through its unfettered rainforest and salivating over the fresh catch of the day. The Central American country is just under 200 km in length, but hey…size doesn’t matter, right? We heard it’s more about the motion of the ocean, and your El Salvador holiday grants you plenty of access to the Pacific.

Things to Do in El Salvador

You didn’t pack your spade and shovel for nothing: You’re determined to begin your time in El Salvador at the beach. At the southern end of the country, Playa Intiputa is not only the home of El Salvador’s first microbrewery, but also an excellent place to undertake a paddleboarding adventure. Meanwhile, along the northern coast, Los Cobanos is popular for its stellar resorts and golden sand. Oh, and you can also get your “Jacques Cousteau” on and explore the famous dive spot here (spoiler: there’s a shipwreck). If you’re looking to recreate Point Break, the town of La Libertad is the place to haul your longboard.

Ye landlubbers should still get excited about El Salvador package deals, because it’s not all about the sand and the sea. Visit Cerro Verde National Park, where you can trek the trails and get a good view of nearby volcanoes. Once you’ve picked out your favourite—say Izalco or Quetzaltepec—make your way there and play a fun game called “Can I outrun hot lava?” (Just kidding, volcano hikes are mum-approved). A few kilometers outside of Santa Tecla you’ll find a different kind of natural attraction: the Los Chorros pools. Designed by Mother Nature, these aquatic masterpieces are bounded by lush landscape and cascading waterfalls.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

While the natural landscape is the largest draw, holidays in El Salvador aren’t without opportunities to spend a little moola. La Gran Via in San Salvador is a top spot to drop some cash. At Galerías Escalón, also in San Salvador, three air-conditioned levels of retail therapy are calling your name. Of course, many smaller towns in the country are teeming with local art and handcrafted goods for sale.

Hopefully you’re not allergic to creatures of the sea or too attached to Nemo, because Salvadorians serve up seafood like nobody’s business. Lobster, crab, octopus…you get the idea: If it lives in the ocean, it’s probably on the menu. You’ll also be thankful for cheap El Salvador holidays when you have plenty of cash to spend on traditional Salvadorian meals. These include pupusas (tortillas stuffed with meat, cheese and other goodies) and tamales.

You’re ready to boogie? About time. The Zona Rosa in San Salvador is where the party is happening. If you can’t make it to the pulse of Salvadorian nightlife, plenty of laid-back bars and cafes are serving up cold drinks throughout the country.
