Quiet area, large room, comfortable bed, lots of big fluffy towels. Hot shower. No heat except for portable radiator heater for cool night which kept room very comfortable. Close parking. No ice machine. No breakfast. Kadoka is small town with only 1 small cafe for meals but good food and service there. Would stay here again. Nice accommodation for the price.
Grandpa Joe's is an old-school motel and you can feel it. It's convenient if you're driving through on I-90 and it's inexpensive. That's the good. The less good is the limited front desk hours, a surly staff, and marginal cleanliness. After checking in and seeing all this, the half-filled swimming pool made me laugh.
This is a classic motel property being rejuvenated. It is being done with care and good ideas by the new owners. It is convenient to the Badlands National Park entrance, and other attractions. Although, Kadoka is a small town, it offers many choices for shopping and restaurants. Easy in and out. Safe. Convenient to I-90.
We ended up in the last room in a long building, without hot water, managed a lukewarm shower...The next morning, left the tap running for 10 minutes, still no hot water...so no showers, just a wet towel wipe.
Room did not have hot water. Was unable to take a shower due to lack of hot water in room the entire stay. Very disappointing. Also, staff seemed unfriendly. No ice available. No breakfast bars or any simple breakfast offering whatsoever other than perhaps coffee. There was an abandoned pool on the property that was full of murky water and unsecured. There were some rooms with young children so that seemed very unsafe. Room was quiet. Appreciated the table and two chairs. Nice rural setting. Who IS Grandpa Joe?
The staff made this a poorly built building into a very nice stay. The coffee in the room was superb. Very good microwave & frig. Nice old style playground for kids. Only bad thing that we had to turn off A/C to use the microwave, but they were working to fix that. The A/C unit was undersized, but it managed to keep the room just cool enough. The room construction was amateurish with plumbing, wallpaper, electrical, and door issues; but everything worked. We would stay here again for sure.
Decent place to stop over for an evening. Room was clean and everything was in working order. Beds were a little stiff, but I got the feeling they were newer mattresses, so probably just need to be broken in.
Needed a place to stay overnight on our way to the Badlands. This motel was convenient, clean and comfortable. Our room had two sinks so I could make coffee while my daughter put on make up. Our room had a very efficient layout and we didn't need to unpack much because we could back up to the door of our room.
It is the old addage don't judge a book by it's cover. The place may not look greaton the outside but it was very clean, had everything we needed for a good nights sleep. We would diffiently stay there again.
