Quite expensive to get such a dated room. Should invest to modernise the bathroom and toilet. Staff were super friendly and welcoming and the set meal was decent. But overall we feel that it was not very good value unfortunately.

We enjoyed our stay here. They offer a shuttle to and from the train station in the morning (0800-1100, I think) and again from 1400-1700. They have a strict no tattoo policy for the public onsen but do offer a private onsen that can be booked in 30 min increments for a fee. As mentioned by others they do not allow any changes to meals. This wasn't a problem for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Our room was spacious and clean. The location was very peaceful and serene.

Great stay. Highly recommended
Wonderful relaxing hotel with indoor and outdoor onsen. Service is absolutely amazing from all personnel. Set dinner was in the room and was served by incredibly wonderful staff member. They are very strict about serving a specific meal and do not accommodate any food allergies and preference. However , they did inform us what the food contains and we had an incredibly delicious and filling dinner! Breakfast was served in a dining room. It was a traditional Japanese breakfast (no coffee…) Highly recommend the place for the incredible service from everyone , the delicious food , nice rooms , nice onsen and views of my Fuji !

We had a wonderful stay here. Both the dinner and the breakfast was amazing and so much food! The onsen has a nice lake view and very clean. Staff was very friendly and would not even let us wheel our own luggage to the room or to our taxi the next morning.

Beautiful Japanese Tradition- Just not comfortable
Wonderful if you are looking to experience traditional Japanese lodging and dining. The staff was amazing. The location beautiful. For my son and I, who are American, it was a very interesting experience. We only stayed one night, however, because the traditional Japanese accommodation was not comfortable for us (of course everything is done of the floor). But

Wakakusa no Yado Maruei is a charming ryokan that exemplifies traditional Japanese hospitality in a serene setting. Guests are welcomed by attentive staff and can enjoy spacious rooms with tatami mats and beautiful views. The on-site onsen provides relaxation, while the kaiseki meals feature seasonal ingredients and exquisite presentation. Overall, it's a highly recommended destination for an authentic and tranquil getaway.

If you want a little slice of heaven…
Very wonderful, authentic ryokan. If you are visiting the Lake Kawaguchiko area, I would highly encourage giving Wakakusa-no-Yado a try. The breakfast and dinner meals were amazing, the customer service (from walking in to checking out) was world class. Private and public onsens. Beautiful rooms with an even more breathtaking view… as well as a spectacular rooftop view of Mt. Fuji. Wish my Japanese was a little better so I could have told them, wholeheartedly, how blessed we were by our stay there.

The hot springs and the food were the standouts of this stay. While the ryokan has several Covid related restrictions (reduced hot spring capacity, using sanitizer before entering dining room at breakfast, having dinner in your room, no karaoke) all in all it didn’t impact the experience. The meals were amazing. The ryokan will send an email saying they don’t make substitutions which for the type of food I’m not surprised. A lot of time and care was spent making each meal. Do yourself a favor and ask for the Japanese version of the menu. The English version isn’t a complete translation. Then use either iPhone or google camera translation. One amazing things I realized is at breakfast this morning which was a more westernized menu was the fact the chef and team are not making the same meal for everyone. It is apparently dependent on how many nights you have stayed. I would go again.
