Le Lunghe is a restored cottage in beautiful Tuscany 5 mins. walk to restaurant

Situated on the side of a hill and surrounded by forests and mountains, Le Lunghe offers the perfect retreat for couples or small families seeking tranquillity and the beauty of the countryside. The cottage is set within a mature, well-maintained garden, cared for by the friendly owner, Giancarlo. At the side of the two-bedroom cottage, a lovely covered veranda provides stunning views over the Serchio Valley and the surrounding hills, offering an ideal spot to relax. The front of the house faces the village, just a few minutes' walk away, as well as the impressive Apuan Mountain range.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Le Lunghe is perfectly situated near various hiking routes, making it an ideal location for hillwalkers. During the summer months, the local village hosts two vibrant festivals. The Medieval Festival features a historical re-enactment and additionally, the Food and Wine Tour to the Rocca di Sassi, showcasing the area's culinary and cultural heritage, is a highlight for visitors.

On the lawn, a 3.5-meter diameter, 90cm deep lightweight swimming pool offers a refreshing place to cool off, while a paved terrace and shaded dining area complete the outdoor space.
The cottage has been carefully restored and extended to preserve its charm. The ground floor features a fully equipped dining kitchen made from reclaimed chestnut wood, complete with an original stone fireplace and wood-burning stove. The living room offers a comfortable sofa, TV, stereo, and a selection of books, and leads out to the covered veranda. A large bathroom with a shower and washing machine completes this level. Upstairs, there are two double bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with twin beds or a double, providing flexibility for guests.

Le Lunghe’s serene setting is perfect for those seeking peace and solitude, yet it is just a few minutes' walk to the medieval village of Sassi, where you'll find an excellent restaurant and a small shop. A newly completed road allows for easy access to the nearby market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, now only a 10-minute drive away. Castelnuovo offers a variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, and a vibrant weekly market.

The town is also home to a train station providing convenient links to Lucca and beyond. By car, you can reach Lucca in 50 minutes, Pisa and its airport in 1.5 hours, Florence in 2 hours, and the stunning coastal villages of Cinque Terre in 2.5 hours. For a beach day, the nearest sandy shore is just over an hour away.

Wonderful place
Le Lunghe beat all imaginable expectations: the house is wonderfully functional with dishwasher, washer and dryer and everything else you would need for a perfect stay. I can't even begin to describe the view from the property, it's simply amazing and we had it all to ourselves. The peace and quiet of the area was beyond expectation, we spent a whole month there and couldn't be happier. Giancarlo not only checked in on us to make sure everything was perfect, he became our family in that short time. We will miss Le Lunghe and Giancarlo dearly and will be back next year! Thank you!!!

Charming host and cottage in a stunning location. Our host was warm and welcoming and very kind and helpful. The property managers were helpful and was a lovely base to do day trips from. We visited Pisa and Florence within our 1 week stay.

El Lunghe
Wonderful, peaceful location, although an interesting drive to and from the property! The house was also very atmospheric with a range of tables with fantastic views of the Garfagnana to eat at and an outdoor barbecue which we made much use of. The restaurant in the nearby village of Sassi (Il Totto) is easily walkable and does one of the most authentic Italian three or four course dining experiences you could wish for. We almost literally rolled back down the hill afterwards. The star turn however is Giancarlo, both for the breakast pastries he generously provided for us and his willingness to drive our luggage up to the road at the end of the week when I was unwilling to risk doing so in the hire car.

I could look at the amazing views forever.
We chose the property with a wish list in mind: Scenery, tranquility, food, and wine. And we got it all, in spades. We had most meals under the rustic lean-to because we could look at the hills and mountains to the west, north and east. The garden is beautifully kept. There were trees with apples, pears, figs, olives and Giancarlo has a tomato vine which he encouraged us to pick. I mean, we are talking real, big, funny-shaped proper tomatoes. Delicious. As if that wasn't enough there were large rosemary bushes that went on the chicken on the BBQ and a sage that found its way into the vitello escallops we fried. Marsala wine at under 5 euros a bottle made it for an amateur's saltimbocca. Giancarlo, the host who lives next door (I use the term next door loosely) is a great fellow. Often checked to see we were ok but not in the least intrusive. The house is a restored farmhouse and all the plumbing, electrics, water, gas etc is bang up to date. TV is good and the wi-fi is excellent Shopping is easy in the huge Conad supermarket down the hill in Gallicano. The local restaurant, Il Totto, we went to four times in the week. They don't run a menu, just what they have fresh on the day. I had the best ever sliced steak in oil and balsamic sauce and we still savour the home-made ravioli with spinach and ricotta. The track down to the house is interesting but totally do-able. Our hire car, a humble 1.2litre Lancia which I dubbed "entrail-free" (gutless) made it up and down every day. In many ways this review doesn't do justice to the property. That's because it is so hard to describe serenity and mountain views. We were totally smitten by the variety of wildlife: goats, deer, friendly lizards, butterflies. In the evenings we liked to hear the owls call to each other and the sound of crickets after the sun went down.

Nicely isolated very quiet. Nice views the track to the villa is very daunting and needs attention ok in 4x4 but anything else is a struggle if any problems English speaking woman not to helpful. Needs outside rubbish bin as have to take rubbish up to village 15 min walk or drive on daunting track house needs a good clean top to bottom cobwebs dead spiders dirty cooker and plenty of dust lamp shades filthy furniture fit for bonfire. It could be very nice. Sort it out home and away totally overpriced

A clean, simple house, well equipped and with wonderful views. The area is beautiful. The owner is kind and helpful but not intrusive. The track surface to the house is poor and probably only suitable for 4wheel drive .But park on the road at the top and enjoy walking through the meadow to the house.Torches required! Fabulous stay in picturesque location with fantastic views
We really enjoyed our week at Le Lunghe, which was beautifully presented and well equipped. Our only concern was the exposed metal reinforcing on the concrete section of the track leading to the house and we actually found it easier and more enjoyable to walk down the path from the road.

Secluded rustic Italian home in the Tuscan hills
A fantastic place to stay. This is a secluded spot on the edge of a fantastic medieval village. Despite its apparent seclusion, all amenities are within relatively easy reach. The house itself is well kept and pretty. It’s not luxurious as such, but that’s the point. This encourages exploration and there is so much to see in the local area. The trail running is wonderful and the local waterfalls/ lakes make wonderful alternatives to beach trips if you want to swim. The local restaurant is great. There is no menu but you’re served generous portions of traditional Tuscan food at seemingly impossible prices! The owner is very nice and pops in regularly to check on how things are. Although some English is spoken locally, basic Italian is definitely an advantage. We couldn’t recommend it more.

great property stunning location facilities just perfect. The owner Giancarlo was great
The driveway to the house is steep and narrow which wasnt a real problem but one section is in a very poor state of repair with steel reinforcing rods sticking up with a great risk of tyre damage

Fabulous holiday staying at Le Lunghe
We loved our stay at Le Lunghe. The setting of the house is lovely, with wonderful views. The house was spotless and had everything we needed. We had very hot weather while we were there, so we were grateful for the pool in the garden. Once we had got used to driving up and down the steep roads, we visited lots of interesting and beautiful places. The nearby train station at Barga/Gallicano is also very handy for visiting Lucca and Pisa. The house is a good base for many places. The host was very friendly, and we enjoyed our day out with him visiting some of the nearby sights. The local restaurant Il Totto is fantastic, great food and extremely good value. We made several visits there to eat. Overall we felt we experienced a very genuine and authentic, beautiful part of Tuscany, thanks to the people, food and amazing scenery. We would love to come back one day.

Lovely cottage with everything needed for an enjoyable vacation
Fantastic location, high up in the mountains with spectacular views all around. A little difficult to find, but a phone call had the owner meet us at a local restaurant and direct us to the cottage. The owner Giancarlo was very welcoming and despite the language difficulty he made sure we had a great holiday and was very helpful. All the local shops and restaurants we visited were great, all in all a lovely relaxing two weeks.

Cosy mountain hideaway!
We spent a week in Le Lunghe in early October. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, so it was important to have a good shelter! The cottage was perfect - terrific view and very cosy inside, with a log fire in the kitchen which made chilly evenings very snug indeed. It's a great spot and an ideal base for exploring the surrounding hills. Remote, away from it all feel, yet Lucca within easy striking distance. We hope to return.

Beautiful cottage with fantastic views.
A lovely cottage with all the essentials provided and very comfortable. Fantastic views over the valley with three sets of tables and chairs outside so it was possible to stay in the shade (or sun) as the day progressed. II Totto Restraunt/Bar in Sassi highly recommended and great value but a phrase book handy if languages are not your thing. Giancarlo (the owner) was very helpful and the flowers in the window boxes were beautiful. The driveway to the cottage can appear daunting but you soon get used to it.

Was snel verholpen.
