We chose Hotel de Orangerie in Bruges to celebrate my birthday, but the experience was far from what we expected of a 4-star hotel. Despite notifying the hotel in advance of my birthday (which they acknowledged), there was no recognition upon check-in, even though my birthday was on my passport. We thought they might surprise us, but nothing came. Even after my husband mentioned it to Corinne at the front desk while asking for restaurant recommendations, there was no acknowledgment or gesture.
We stayed in the “Romantic Room with Canal View,” but the windows were so dirty we couldn’t enjoy the view until I cleaned them. The fireplace didn’t work, the lamps flickered due to old wiring, and the bathroom needed extra cleaning. The water provided in reusable bottles appeared unwashed, so we purchased bottled water.
On the second night, we moved to the “Heritage Room,” which was a nightmare. The bathroom light didn’t work and was never fixed. The room was filthy, with stained carpets, IKEA bedding, and moldy windows. The heater emitted a burnt plastic smell, and we discovered it was full of dust, trash, and items from previous guests. The showerhead came out of the wall, and the sink was clogged with sludge.
At checkout, Corinne claimed she didn’t know it was my birthday and offered water and cookies as an afterthought, which we declined. This hotel fails to meet basic standards of hospitality or cleanliness and does not deserve its 4-star rating.
