If the idea of staying in an adorable (and tiny) "off-the-grid" cabin (no electricity) located close to everything the Bay Area has to offer appeals to your sense of adventure, this is the place for you. Located just behind the main house where you'll have 24-hour access to the bathroom and kitchen for making coffee (and outlets to power your electronics). Simple.
PLEASE READ THROUGH THE LISTING to learn more about the cabin, location, transportation, and local amenities. 10% hotel tax included.
The space
PLEASE VERIFY THAT YOU’VE READ THIS DESCRIPTION WHEN YOU BOOK.
The 8 x 10 primitive cordwood garden cabin sleeps a single person (or cuddlesome couple) comfortably. There's an antique iron extra-long twin bed, chest of drawers, and small amount of hanging space. You might feel cramped with a large suitcase inside. There is NO ELECTRICITY or HEAT (there is wifi though), but the down comforter will keep you toasty. Equipped with battery-powered lantern with phone charger for your use.
NOTE: the kitchen and shared bathroom are in the main house. Please do not eat or leave food in the cabin. It will attract mice!!
Limit 2 guests.
The cabin is located in the garden behind the main house. A walkway skirts the brick patio between the cabin and porch, where you’ll use the kitchen door to enter the main house. You'll have access to the kitchen (to make coffee or tea only--no cooking) and SHARED bathroom in the main house throughout your stay. Because the bathroom is SHARED, it’s helpful to coordinate morning showering schedules.
Since the cabin has NO ELECTRICITY, you are welcome to use the kitchen outlets as needed to charge devices. The lantern in the cabin (which includes a USB port) may be recharged as needed.
The sliding cabin door has a padlock you may use (most guests do not bother) and there’s a chain on the inside for security. There are 6’ tall fences surrounding the back of the house. I have lived here 24 years and have never had a security issue.
I have an affectionate mini-poodle named Gilly in residence.
I'll generally be around during your stay and will help you get situated and comfortable with the lighting in the cabin. You are welcome to make coffee or tea in the morning (or anytime) if you like.
This is a really safe and cute neighborhood, with shopping and dining a short walk from the house. There is ample street parking available.
The #18 bus to downtown Berkeley is on Solano Avenue, 2 blocks away. N. Berkeley BART is a 15 minute walk along a recently renovated pedestrian/bike path. There's parking at the station. BART runs from SFO or to OAK. If my schedule permits, I'm happy to pick you up or drop you at the N. Berkeley BART station. There are always taxis there, as well as Uber or Lyft.
Guest access
The cabin is located in the garden behind the main house. A brick path leads along a patio to the porch and kitchen door of the house. You'll have access to the kitchen (to make coffee or tea only--no cooking, though you can use the microwave) and bathroom in the main house throughout your stay. Again--feel free to use the kitchen outlets if you need to charge an electronic device.
Note: there is not a bathroom in the cabin. The only bathroom is inside the main house.
Other things to note
I have a very sweet little poodle puppy named Gilly in residence. And there are steps to get into the back yard, cabin, and main house.
