About this property

Family-friendly farm house, pool & tennis court, with large garden, near Loire

La Chapelle is a renovated stone farmhouse with heated private pool, tennis court and six adult bikes. You are only 40 mins drive from the famous Loire chateaux but you will find plenty of chateaux, vineyards, gardens, troglodyte caves and other attractions around Montoire and Vendome. The house sits in a large private garden, part of 4.5 acres of orchards and woods. The 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms can easily accommodate 12 adults and children. It works well for two families plus grandparents or other relatives. The house is very family friendly with lots of things to do outside.

La Chapelle is a long low building (80 by 20 ft). Originally only one third of the building was habitable. The other parts were for storage and animals. The previous owners converted the building to make a family-friendly holiday house.

Before conversion the spacious living room (450 sq ft) was the old hay barn so it has a high ceiling with wonderful exposed beams. Luckily stone and matching windows were found to fill in the barn door and old quarry tiles were collected to redo the flooring throughout the house. A large stone fireplace was installed, so that with a coffee table, sofas and armchairs there is a comfy space around the fire. You are welcome to light the fire with logs from by the garden shed. This is especially nice if you are having an evening meal at the magnificent 9 ft oak table which can seat 12. WiFi and a music CD are available, but, despite no TV, we have never had any complaints.

Bedroom layout suits two families. Because of the high ceiling there are no bedrooms above the living space. As you can see from the photo of the floor plan the house is neatly divided into two parts. There is a double bedroom, a twin room, bathroom and toilet upstairs at the west end of the house. Equally, at the other end, there is a double bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, and four single beds upstairs. All the bedrooms upstairs have oak parquet flooring. Finally, if grandparents, or other friends, are staying there is an en-suite twin bedroom on the ground floor at the west end. The two main bathrooms each have a shower over the bath. The ensuite bathroom has a shower enclosure.

As you will see there is a converted barn beside the main house. It has a twin and a double bed room and is fully equipped with central heating. However, it can only be booked by special arrangement, and no-one stays there when there are guests in the main house.

We clearly know the importance of an efficient and well equipped kitchen with a lot of family and friends visiting every year. New cupboards with more storage were installed in 2014 as well as new equipment – electric oven with five ring gas hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The stone BBQ sits outside conveniently close to the backdoor into the kitchen. There is a small laundry room off the kitchen which includes a clothes washing machine, tumble dryer, iron/ironing board, cool boxes for picnics and a raclette set.

Eating well is important in France. Unfortunately many village boulangeries are closing but we have several excellent boulangeries in the neighbourhood the closest in Lavardin at 10 minutes by car. We also have Patrick just 10 minutes away who does home cooking. He will bring meals to the house and he is used to coming to the house regularly every summer. There is also a very simple restaurant (snackbar ) at the camping site in Prunay just 3 km away. Bigger restaurants can be found in Lavardin, Montoire and Vendome.

But of course families come to rural France to do things outside and we have excellent outdoor features. First the heated swimming pool – you will see from the photos that it is close to the house and surrounded by a hedge. The secure fence is embedded in the hedge with gates for the safety of children.

As you go through the hedge it feels as though you are stepping into a large garden room. This feeling is heightened as the level of the pool, in the centre of the space, is slightly lower than ground level. Also there are trees and shrubs around the edge of the ‘room’ and the paved terrace is indented with flower beds and grass verges. On warm nights you can dine out by the pool and turn on the pool lights as it gets dark. Magic!

The garden captures the sun all day long and the house is set back from the single track road which has very little traffic. The garden is looked after by Albert our caretaker. His house is just a 150 yards away on the other side of the road. We are lucky that he is a retired gardener. As a result the whole landscape is well maintained. It’s a pleasure to stay at La Chapelle for the whole day!

The second outdoor feature is the hard tennis court just 60 yards from the house. Like the pool it has its own attractive space surrounded by hedges and planted with shrubs. The court is proving very popular and, if you need a tennis teacher do not hesitate to contact Stephane Lequimbre (00 33 6 5087 3592).

Third, we keep six quality bikes in the shed behind the house which you are welcome to use. They are fully equipped with kids’ seats so you can all bike to visit a neighbouring farm or wood. The bikes were bought through our caretaker Albert. He and his son are keen cyclists, so he can help if required.

In the cupboard under the stairs you will also find a croquet set, a set of boules, a small tent and several hammocks. There are also some inflatable pool items and an inflatable paddling pool for the very young.
A kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, an oven, and a stovetop. The bathroom has a shower and a hair dryer. Conveniences include a microwave and a coffee/tea maker.
Enjoy recreation amenities such as an outdoor pool or take in the view from a garden.
Guests will find features like internet access and onsite parking.

Loire Valley Week at La Chapelle
The location was great - quiet and remote. The house, La Chapelle, provided everything we needed for the week: plenty of space and facilities - swimming pool, tennis court, table tennis, bicycles etc. The four grandchildren loved the swimming pool and spent a huge amount of time playing in the water. The grounds to the house are extensive and well looked after with plenty of space for the children to run around and explore. The surrounding area is relatively flat so cycling is easy. The Loire valley is a wonderful area to visit which we know well having stayed before on several occasions. We had a really enjoyable week. We would recommend this property and may well return again in the future.

Real Rural France
Pretty much exactly as advertised. Gorgeous! Suzaan was very easy to communicate with and did her best to make our stay exactly what we anticipated; a wonderful family gathering involving swimming, tennis, cooking, cooking, cooking. Too much eating, outside, surrounded by beautiful gardens and miles of wheat, corn, barely and bean fields. The local markets gave us a good insight into the workings of this agricultural land. Virtually no English spoken there which is to our liking. This is an old, funky farm house in an agricultural district with no tourists in sight. During our 10 day visit with various family coming and going, we had a running joke that the modern conveniences "half worked." No matter for us. Albert and Genevieve, two neighbors who help caretake the property were around to guide us through and even stop by for a coffee with the dog. There are no screens on the windows, which is typical for rural France; typical for most of Europe. If you are afraid of bugs and want all the creature comforts of home this is not the place for you. It is also a little musty, and cool inside. The pool is great, the tennis court is beautiful, if old (it could use a new net and if you are serious about tennis bring your own racquet and balls), the kitchen is more than good enough for more than two cooks at once. Everyone loved it. If Provence isn't your thing, or in your price range, an experience here might be just the ticket.

Rustic Retreat
A very enjoyable family holiday, the house is very rustic and well inhabited but exhudes family homeliness. We especially enjoyed the outdoor activities, swimming, croquet, pétanque, table tennis, tennis, cycling. All the outdoor activities only added further to the enjoyment of our stay.

Paradise found
To my wife’s annoyance I am usually able to find something to dislike about a holiday home, but in the case of La Chapelle there is nothing to dislike. It is a beautifully restored timber framed barn, tastefully decorated and very well equipped (I have never stayed anywhere with a better equipped kitchen), set in gorgeous, huge grounds in a quiet, safe, pretty and tiny village close to the glorious chateaux of the Loire Valley. The owner is communicative and keen to ensure you have all the info you need before you arrive (but lives in a different country so isn’t on your doorstep) and the French caretakers - a retired couple who live at the far end of the little village - are charming and friendly (try their fresh eggs). 100% recommend - for families especially.

Perfect birthday gathering!
Superb location for friends and family to gather for a birthday party. Pool and tennis facilities were excellent and a plethora of games and space made for a great active week. The kitchen was well equipped and bedrooms spacious and well set up. A real homely space that created a sense of trust and relaxation. Our local hosts were on hand when we needed them and the surrounding area was easy to explore.

June 2022: Spent a week in week here. Home was very nice. More-or-less matched the pictures. Only comment is that the pool could have been a little cleaner. Water was green-ish, not blue-ish. Overall great though. Nice and quiet and remote.

We loved this house with its beautiful shutters and so many things to do.
This is not a classic holiday house. This is obviously a much loved home that has benefited for lots of love and much conversion. Its very rustic and quite basic in lots of ways and yet has everything you could possibly want. It has a beautiful garden with a swimming pool and tennis court.. It has 6 bikes to ride with the added advantage of kiddy seats to put on if you need.. It has a wonderful cupboard filled with games and toys. The kitchen has everything you would ever need.. Lots of places to eat both inside and out. We literally loved every minute.

Family Fun!
We were a group of 8 which included two generations (60’ somethings and 20 somethings). We had an amazing stay. The house is very spacious with great indoor and outdoor dining options and a nice kitchen to prepare meals. We enjoyed all the outdoor toys including crocket, badminton and tennis. (It was too cold to swim). The house is about 40 minutes to castles and wineries and we enjoyed excursions to both. Albert the care taker was very nice and accessible. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

Wonderful location near to pretty villages
Excellent facilities with pool and tennis court. Quiet, but convenient location with the use of bicycles to visit nearby attractions. Lavardin, Vendome and Montoire sur Loir are very pretty villages/towns and it was an authentic French experience. All the locals were friendly and welcoming. Great trip.

A lovely family holiday home
We were a family of 9 adults and there is no doubt it was a wonderful house for us all to stay in. Plenty of room, extremely comfortable, endless hot water, everything worked very well. Beds very comfortable, kitchen well equipped. The fruit trees were in full fruit and the garden was very well maintained. We used the pool a lot and the temperature was just right - it was slightly heated. We also played a lot of tennis - a lovely court. The information files the Campbells left on the sitting room table were full of very useful information, and good ideas. All in all a very happy week.

Beautifully maintained, renovated farmhouse in Loire Valley.
This farmhouse has been sympathetically renovated and is well maintained and managed by the attentive owners. The property itself is positioned in a rural location with the local villages (and boulangerie) easily accessible by the bicycles provided. The heated outdoor swimming pool was a good size and much appreciated. The tennis court was in excellent condition with balls and rackets provided. There were several outdoor seating options for mealtimes, with or without shade and the kitchen was well stocked with good quality crockery and cutlery. Overall, it was apparent how well the property was cared for and the information provided by the owner, Nigel, both written and spoken during an introductory phone call, was accurate and helpful. Further to a previous review, there were some houseflies noted, particularly during the hotter days, but no worse than that we have experienced in other properties we have stayed in in rural France and several measures were in place in the kitchen, in particular, to address the issue. We found this an excellent property for two families with a total of five children aged 10 and under and we are hopeful of staying again.

Beautiful cottage, quiet location, shame about the flies!
The cottage itself is beautiful, in a quiet rural location. It’s fully equipped with everything you can think of, although we did need to take towels from other bedrooms, as the double room we used only had 1 x bath towel and 1 x hand towel. Albert, the caretaker, came to greet us and gave us some fresh eggs, which were willingly devoured and were delicious. Being there during a heatwave meant full use of the pool, which is fabulous, although there was a fair bit of debris at the bottom. The tennis court is well maintained and of professional standard. We managed to make use of it once the evening cooled. Being picky, we felt the bathrooms needed a bit of tlc but were functional. We did have an issue with a toilet flush running continuously, but this became intermittent when we tried to fix it. Unfortunately we were unable to contact the caretaker but did inform the owners. The only thing that marred our stay was the swarms of flies. We think this was due to the heat but at times it was unbearable. Preparing food was a nightmare and we ended up having to constantly hoover up flies. Overall it is a fabulous place to stay, plenty of room and beautiful, well maintained gardens.

Lovely property in beautiful grounds
This is a lovely spacious property. We stayed with two other couples and due to the layout, we all had our own space and private bathroom facilities. The house is comfortable and extremely well equipped. Lots of cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, including for the bbq. A large table in the kitchen and another in the living room. Lots of board games and books and a whole cupboard of outdoor and pool equipment. There is a separate barn with 2 bedrooms that can be rented alongside the house for additional guests. There is lots of parking. The gardens are really lovely and the pool area is in a garden area of its own surrounded by hedges and gates. We didn’t have the best weather during our stay, but the pool area was quite protected from the wind. The owners communicated well during the whole booking and stay. We were welcomed on arrival by Albert who looks after the property. He showed us around and gave us a dozen fresh eggs. He does not speak English but is very friendly. The Intermarche is about 15 minutes away in Montoire. This stocked everything we needed. There is also a market twice a week. There are lots of beautiful towns and chateau to visit locally. The only issue we had were a lot of flies in the kitchen, but after a couple of days being vigilant with the fly swat it was fine. If we return to the Loire we wouldn’t hesitate to book this property again.

We had a lovely holiday, and the house was absolutely perfect. Attractive, comfortable and fun.
We had an absolutely lovely time at the house. We were there for a family holiday, with ages ranging from 10 through to 82, and everyone had a wonderful time. The house is very attractive, very comfortable, extremely well equipped, and in a lovely quiet rural location - all of which was exactly what we were looking for. And the house/grounds are amply sized to allow everyone to do what they like without being in the way of anybody else - something for everyone. The local information in the house was very useful/helpful - we used Patrick's cooking service one evening, and visited two Chateaux nearby (Chenonceau and Chambord). But the rest of the time, we were all very happy to stay at the house, use the pool and the tennis court, and enjoy the leisurely pace of holiday life! Albert (who looks after the house on behalf of the owners) and the gardener lady were charming, helpful, attentive.....and very tolerant of our patchy French language skills! I would certainly hope to return for a future holiday. Many thanks indeed! Will

Wonderful escape with everything we needed
We had a really relaxing week at La Chapelle - plenty of space both inside and out for our group of 8 to both spend time all together and in smaller groups/alone. Fantastic heated pool and we loved playing croquet and tennis. The house is extremely well-equipped (clearly a home) especially the kitchen. La Chapelle is in a very private area and we didn't feel overlooked or overheard at any point. Everyone felt very rested by the end of the week and we hope to go back again soon. Thoroughly recommend it.

Excellent house in rural France
Excellent house in quiet countryside location. The house is just as the photos show it and came with everything we needed – from all kitchen utensils to half a dozen bikes in the shed to ride to Prunay. You can tell this is someone’s house rather than an investment property minimally kitted out. In great clean condition when we arrived with house keeper Alfred out the front mowing the lawn. He lives next door and pops round to ensure things are ok especially regarding the pool. Many hours spent in the pool with the kids. Was quiet enough to relax at but easy enough to drive to the Chateaux or to Vendome to pick up the high speed train for a day trip to Paris. Plenty of helpful maps and tips in the house, Le Piron in Montoire an excellent recommendation. The ruined castle at Lavardin great for small kids to easily explore. Nigel (the owner) was very willing to answer any questions and even phoned us in Australia beforehand to check we were all ok and if we needed anything else. Even little things like the floor plan on the website made it easy to establish it would be suitable for our wider family needs. Overall was a perfect house for us to holiday at with the extended family.
