Historic Keddie River Retreat on Spanish Creek

A Family paradise at 3225 feet elevation nestled in the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains! Located just seven miles from the Plumas county seat of Quincy, California. Here is where you will find this lovely home on the banks of Spanish Creek. Situated just below the historic old resort, mining community, and railroad town of Keddie. Positioned within viewing distance from our home is one of the seven wonders of the Western Pacific Railroad, the famous Wye bridge trestle. The “Wye” and town were named for Arthur Keddie. Keddie was an engineer who pioneered and surveyed the route for the railroad through the Feather River back in 1909.

Fast forward to the 1960s when Keddie was being transformed into a resort by realtor Clarence Arthur English Jr. who had purchased the town in ’57 with the goal of making it into a first class resort destination. One of the features that Mr. English developed was the “Swimmin Hole’ which were a series of stone stairs leading down to patios and built in stone barbecue pits on the banks of Spanish Creek.

More than 50 years later the beautiful rock work and patios still exist and in fact have been reborn for today’s generation of families. This wonderful setting with its modest home is available now to be enjoyed by young and old alike.

The home is a fully equipped, modern, and cheerful. It boasts three private sleeping areas. The master bedroom has a large closet, a California King bed, and it's own private bath. The large master bath includes a beautiful claw foot tub for relaxing, a separate private room with a large modern stand-up shower. Another sleeping room offers a Queen Bed with antique dressers for storage. This room also has its own door into a full bath. The front of the house has another sleeping room that has a Double Bed. Off this room is the laundry with a washer and dryer and storage area. A Queen size Aero Bed is also available.

The home has a fully stocked modern kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, cook top, double ovens and a dishwasher. The counter area also claims three high backed stools to accommodate seating at the kitchen counter.

Off the kitchen is a sitting area for relaxing and enjoying the pictures and history of Keddie Resort in its heyday of the 1960s. Oh and the sofa is also a sleeper that can be made to sleep two additional adults or children as the need might arise.

The dinning area has seating for six, while the living area has a large sofa just right for viewing the hi-definition large screen television that is artfully hidden when not in use in the large decorative wall cabinet and book case.

Out the French doors by the kitchen and sitting area is a covered porch that spans the entire length of the house. Seating is not a problem in the numerous chairs, the outside bar, and bar stools that adorn the porch.
Make yourself comfortable in this air-conditioned vacation home, featuring a kitchen with a refrigerator and an oven. There's a private patio. Complimentary wireless internet access keeps you connected, and a Smart television is provided for your entertainment. Conveniences include a microwave and a coffee/tea maker.
Take in the views from a garden and make use of amenities such as barbecue grills.
Guests will find features like internet access and onsite parking.

Our Annual Visit
Perfect, as always. A week of resting, reading, and enjoying the hospitality of Ember & Chris. So many updates this year! It only added to the pleasure of this ‘home away from home’. We just got home today, but can’t wait for next year!

Family fun filled weekend getaway!
We had such a wonderful time staying at this property. It’s tucked away in a private area right ON the river and so close to a private swimming hole. I loved the deck and patio by the river, and really sweet spot to enjoy the peacefulness of the area. The hosts were so easy to get a hold of and pleasant to interact with. The house was stocked with everything we needed and stores in town were only a short 10 min drive away. We were there during an unfortunate heat wave but the hosts provided clear direction on how to keep the house cool and comfortable. We’re hoping to come back again soon!

Amazing Place In Plumas
I would love to give this place a bad review so I don’t have to compete with other people in the future for it but, of course, I can’t do that. This house is absolutely idyllic. Right on the creek, rustic, huge well-equipped kitchen, awesome, super responsive host. This spot really has it all. Close enough to Quincy to grab supplies but far enough out that you feel really isolated. Quiet (except for the occasional train which I happen to love) and stocked with everything you could need. We plan on coming back during the fishing/summer season. Thanks Ember!!!

This is a beautiful property that is very well cared for and maintained. The house is gorgeous and the surrounding property is amazing. Chris and Ember do a fantastic job ensuring the home has everything you'll need for your stay, and their communication is superb. This is a fantastic spot for a nice quiet get away, and also offers a great location for many different adventures if you want. We will definitely be coming back to enjoy the house during the summer months!!

Back Again…
This was our second annual trip to English Oaks and I can’t say enough about it. Although there is much to do in this interesting area, we go strictly for the R&R and it is perfect as we spent a full week getting some much needed rest. Our hosts, Ember & Chris, along with their two sweet pups, always make us feel so at home. I should mention they are super accommodating with special requests too. We will be returning year after year for this welcome change from the usual pace. Thanks so much Ember and Chris!

Bit of Paradise for the 3rd time
Our 3rd stay was as wonderful as ever. Below is the review from May of 2019 with a few changes that apply to 2023. I can't recommend this delightful place more - a rare find! "Nothing can beat spring at English Oaks. Spanish Creek was roaring this year due to the extreme winter snows and snowmelt; birds abound with new species to delight us. The oaks, maples and dogwood were freshly leafed out and blooming. This home is perfectly located on the edge of the creek (river!) far from other cabins in Keddie. The terraces and a fantastic deck from which to enjoy the surrounding beauty provide sun or shade as you desire. The living room, kitchen and master bedroom open onto to the view of the creek so you're never far away from the natural beauty. Attention to design and decor inside make the home a pleasure to occupy. It is located conveniently to many great hiking trails. The hosts were warm, responsive, helpful and unobtrusive. The kitchen is well stocked with all you need to fix your meals with ease. Hope to return for yet another spring, and maybe for fall color one year! Thank you, Chris and Ember, for creating and making this wonderful space available! ps: we did NOT find the trains to be obtrusive and for train buffs the Keddie Wye is a special treat.

Beautiful House and Location!
We loved our stay! This house is right on the river and the owners had paddle boards and a paddle boat available for our use. The outdoor seating areas are beautiful and had plenty of patio furniture for morning coffee and outdoor dining. The house has everything you need to cook meals and was the perfect size for 4 adults and one teen. It is well equipped and nicely decorated. Owners were helpful and friendly and have a sweet dog that came by to check on us, but was not in the way or underfoot. We enjoyed our time at this property tremendously!

A very nice house in a beautiful setting and we greatly enjoyed our five night stay in August
It cooled down at night and fans/AC kept the inside cool during the day. We had been worried the river would be low, but the two deep swimming holes on the property were filled – each of large pool size. Between these, lots of less deep water for playing. Bring swim shoes. A bigger swimming hole, with rope swing, is up by the main road. There also is beautiful Bucks lake, 20 miles away, and much higher up, so cooler. We never managed to walk to the Keddie Wye overlook, but the trains whistled perhaps once an hour, less at night -- a background sound that did not disturb anyone’s sleep. The house was nicely decorated and came with everything one might have forgotten to buy for the kitchen (spices, oil, s’more set, tomatoes from Ember's greenhouse). There is a good barbecue on the shady porch facing the river, where one can easily laze away the hot summer days (the porch is not clearly visible on the photos, but a great feature in the heat). There are sunny terraces, down by the river, including one with table, twinkly lights and wood-fired oven for s’mores, where we had our dinners. The owners live next door, 10 feet away. They were not intrusive, very friendly and helpful whenever approached. River, the dog, is large and calm, a good addition to life on the porch. There is a house on the other side of the river, half-hidden in trees, but we only saw a guy on the weekend, with guitar and campfire, adding to the ambience. We came on a three-generation holiday and the one thing that did not work were the sleeping arrangements. We wanted bedrooms/living space on the same floor, to make life easier with a senior. In the event, the only bedroom that worked for the 90-year-old was the beautiful, spacious master bedroom, with dressing room and en-suite. Bedroom 2 has no windows and a bed so tall, only our teenagers could access it. Bedroom 3 has small bunkbeds, in which an adult cannot sit up. My husband and I ended up in there... For parents with kids or a single couple the space works fine, but for us, or two couples, it is difficult. I believe Ember is planning to work on the beds to make the space more versatile. The water: It does smell funky fresh from the faucet but is fine after a sec (gas from the well?) so let it sit a bit. There is a red residue (iron?), so don't do a white wash... We used it for cooking, toothbrushing, coffee, ice cubes etc, and bought bottled water at Safeway to drink. Really not a problem!

Our family enjoyed this quiet and relaxing getaway! The housezwas very clean, spacious and had all the amenities we beeded. We were pleasantly surprised to find SUP paddles and a paddle boat for our use. We all had a great time on the river. Ember let us pick fruit and herbs from the green house, and their sweet pup was a friendly greeter during the day. Next time we'll bring our pups! Thank you for a fantastic stay!

Perfection!
Perfect down to the last detail! We were looking for a place relatively close to home to go to for some peace and quiet, rest and relaxation. We couldn't have been more pleased with the warm reception from Ember & Chris and the sweet old fashioned hospitality we received. Right down to fresh flowers in every room, everything was so much more than we expected. The view on the back "porch" is wonderful and the visits from River (their dog) was heartwarming. What a sweet boy! Although quiet times where what we were looking for, if you want there is plenty to do and most interesting. If you re a train buff, you definitely want to stay here. We are definitely looking forward to returning next year and ideally many years thereafter. We have been doing VRBO for several yers now, and this was the best! Thanks so much to Ember & Chris (and River!).

Ember, Chris, and River were excellent hosts. The house is on a beautiful creek and and a restful swimming hole just a few minutes away walking. It was an oasis. Few people, quiet, and a lot of space to read, put together a jigsaw puzzle. We all left relaxed. Thank you for a great stay! We will be back!
