Rye is a 13th century cinque port in East Sussex, host to the River Rother, Romney Marshes and a history dating back before the Norman Conquest. A cobbled town offering an excellent array of unusual shops, antique emporiums, galleries selling local artist paintings and pottery, Rye also has a delightful range of tea rooms, restaurants, pubs and historic inns. There is also a weekly general market on Thursdays, as well as a farmers’ market every Wednesday morning. The town played host to BBC film crews for nine weeks in the summer of 2014, while filming of the TV series Mapp and Lucia took place, which has now been made into a DVD. All coastal scenes were filmed in nearby Camber Sands and bits of filming also took place in Hastings and the Tenterden Town railway station. Walkers and birdwatchers can enjoy a footpath leading across the marshes to Camber Castle built by Henry VIII. Local attractions include miniature or full-size steam train rides, local vineyards, stately homes, castles, gardens and beaches, including the beautiful nearby Camber Sands. Artists and photographers will especially enjoy the scenery; big skies, winding roads, and picturesque villages with ancient inns and tea shops. A truly relaxing and wonderful holiday destination.

You will enjoy your own access to the home with no shared access.

Located on one of Rye’s famous cobbled streets, this spectacular holiday home is just a few steps away from the wide selection of independent cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. Spend an afternoon wandering the art galleries, discovering antique collectables or sampling some freshly caught seafood. Or, hop in the car for just three miles to reach Camber Sands, where you’ll find water sports facilities, miles of soft golden sand and beautiful dunes.

Almost a week in Rye
In a grand old house overlooking the flatlands to the sea, with a view of miles. First impressions: huge. Second: who’s having which room (they all were en-suite so it didn’t really matter). Third - I want a bookcase like that one! We loved the first floor reading book as much as the sun room sofa. This was an easy stay in central Rye. A bit of a faff with two cars to park and repark - but parking is so inexpensive, we could park for 24 hours for less than it costs for an hour at home. The weather wasn’t the best, so we worked round that with our trips to local beaches and the steam train to Hythe for fun. Loved our cinema trip and our favourite meal out was to Rye Sushi.

Lovely house in the centre of Rye
The house was perfectly located right in the heart of Rye. Opposite one of the best pub/restaurants and minutes walk from all the lovely shops and restaurants of Rye. The kitchen was well kitted out with everything needed to prepare and cook a good meal. And the back patio has lovely views over the fields. There had been a leak just before our stay from the house next door which damaged some of the carpets and walls which the owner kindly prewarned us of, but didn’t cause any functional issues for us. Some of the rooms could do with a spruce up - a couple of the bathrooms are lovely and modern, but some are still a fairly basic shower set up over a bath. The curtains in some of the rooms could also do with darker curtains (currently just thin white curtains) or blinds, especially in the summer. Parking in Rye town is tricky, but it was only a 4 minute walk to a very reasonably priced car park. All in all a lovely house in a perfect location with a good set up at a great price.

Spacious house, terrific central location
Plenty of space and far-reaching views over the marsh, very comfortable rooms and a great (top floor) shower, though other bathrooms were older. Kitchen is spacious and has everything you need. We had difficulties with tricky front door keys/locks on more than one occasion, and the downstairs bathroom door became completely stuck, but response from Quest Cottages was very quick, friendly and efficient. A fabulous stay, right in the heart of Rye - thank you!
