Everybody who visits the Dordogne loves it, but you do hear horror stories about some accommodation at all levels of the market and we all have different perceptions of what is acceptable. However, I would defy anyone to not like this Hotel! Beautifully maintained characterful stone buildings in an elevated location, screened by woodland. The bedrooms are mostly separated from the main house, giving a sense of privacy, and the lounge, kitchen and eating areas are practical and easy to use. All areas are tastefully decorated and well maintained.
Hosts Karen and Maarten are multilingual, friendly, helpful and greatly enhanced the overall experience of staying at La Roche d'Esteil, with helpful suggestions and the advantage of local knowledge. Maarten is a chef, with an obvious passion for food and if you are offered the chance to participate in one of the multi course dinners that they offer, take it! The meal that we had was better than its equivalent in a 5 star establishment in Sarlat and with the added benefit of Karen telling us about each course!
Put all these facets above, together, and you quickly realise that this is a rare gem!
