This is an interesting hotel, especially given that it's a shared facility with both a hotel and hostel. We stayed in the hotel, which was fine. The room was what we expected, minimal but clean. Having been to San Juan many times before, I'd say this hotel fit the feel for most of the typical budget-friendly facilities. Some of the fixtures were odd (the door to the bathroom was one you might see for a home's front entrance, with wooden trim and a side window - yes, a clear window into the bathroom, so it didn't feel very private). There were a couple holes in the walls, loose outlets, and the smoke detector was missing (the empty bracket was there). The shower was great, with fantastic water pressure. The front desk staff were wonderful, and extremely helpful as we'd needed to store our luggage and prepare for the next leg of our trip.
The neighborhood has some issues, with lots of closed shops, neglect, graffiti. It's hard to tell why things closed: economy, scheduled for renovation, or storm damage. Either way, while a bummer, we never felt unsafe... It was just a longer walk at that time of the morning for breakfast. Overall, I would recommend this hotel, just make sure your expectations fit for the property. This is a clean place to sleep, with a comfortable bed and excellent staff.
