Townhome - Center of Historic Santa Fe, Car Unnecessary, across st from Spa

Permit #: 157078

Palace of the Sleeping Dog-Uno is a newly renovated townhome situated in a single building comprising 3 distinct units, each with a separate entrance. Located at the corner of East Palace Avenue and Paseo de Peralta, this lovely townhome is just a 5 minute walk (0.3 miles) to the Plaza in the center of historic Santa Fe. A car is unnecessary.

This historic property, renovated in 2019 to a very high standard ensuring quiet accommodation , has an open spacious feeling with abundant natural light.

The home opens to the light filled open-concept living/dining/kitchen with hardwood floors throughout. The living room is designed for comfortable entertaining or relaxing, and the dining room features a wood burning kiva fireplace. The immaculate kitchen is tastefully appointed with high-end finishes and top-of-the-line appliances. The master suite features a King bed. This bed may also be separated into two twin beds upon special request. The guest bedroom has a Queen bed. The bathroom, with a walk-in shower, exhibits the same level of tasteful finishes found throughout the house.

There is a shared laundry facility (for the 3 townhomes) on premises with with a full size washer and dryer available upon request. The access is generally intended for guests staying one week or more. Laundry detergent is not provided given the sensitivities of guests.

Welcome to the Palace of the Sleeping Dog: What’s that name all about? We chose it because:
A. It relates to a Santa Fe legend,
B. We love dogs,
C. No one has a greater talent for relaxing and sleeping than a dog!,
D. Our lovely building is on Palace Avenue and who doesn’t want to highlight an address like that, and
E. If your dog would like to join you on your trip, Welcome!

Now regarding that Santa Fe legend: The famous Santa Fe based novelist Richard Bradford related that when describing to visitors how to get to his house (which, by the way, was very close to where you are now, just up Canyon Road), in the absence of street signs (this was in the 1950’s) he would tell them to “Turn left at the sleeping dog.” There was a large shaggy dog who spent most of every day napping in a shady patch on Camino Del Monte Sol, so reliably that he served as a landmark.

But the point of Bradford’s story goes beyond the literal. In Santa Fe, we understand the value of going slow, of marching to the beat of our own drum, of going along with change but not too fast and not too completely, and yes, of knowing how to enjoy a fine spot of shade on a summer day.

And should you feel so inclined, you might engage in a few other canine meditations, under the gaze of the meditating dog you will find in your apartment. Is there some situation in your current life, for instance, where you might be better advised to let sleeping dogs lie?
Do you sometimes venture into places or situations unwise for anyone but mad dogs and Englishmen?
Do you pursue things doggedly? Are you currently dogged by any worries that you perhaps could let go of?
Rest, relax, take a stroll to the Plaza (5 minutes), sit on the porch with a cup of coffee or drink. Or for more ideas on how to enjoy Santa Fe, see the guest manual.

Tommy Macaione Park is a short block away for enjoying the outdoors or walking your dog (please pick up after though). Tommy is a famous local Santa Fe artist that used to paint wonderful landscapes from the park venue.
Make yourself comfortable in this air-conditioned vacation home, which features a fireplace and a Smart TV. A kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, an oven, and a stovetop. Conveniences include a microwave and a coffee/tea maker, and housekeeping is provided on request.

Great Location
Easy walking distance to so many places! Lovely casita. The property was comfortable and clean. We didn't cook much but the kitchen is well-outfitted. Easy parking. (Although, Santa Fe has a free shuttle to a lot of sights.) Some street noise, but not very noticeable with closed windows. Would stay again.

Clean, bright, spacious and functional
We all LOVED the skylights which made the rooms cheerful and bright even on cloudy days...one bedroom did not have a skylight which might be nice for sleepy-heads. Beds were very comfortable in spacious bedrooms. In spite of day traffic, the noise did not seem to bother due to thick walls. The appliances were fantastic and the kitchen was plentifully equipped. Great WiFi and TV...also electrical plugs were handy. Easy walk to downtown though we enjoyed the Palacio Restaurant 1 1/2 blocks away more than The Shed (popular restaurant downtown). We enjoyed the French pastries (yum) and coffee at "The New Baking Company" after visiting the Railyards and groceries at Trader Joes and Whole Foods were not far away. In our week there we enjoyed the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, Museum Hill (both the Indian and International museums), Canyon road arts, the capitol building (lots of art) and hanging out on the Plaza downtown...and at night we had a comfortable space to relax and play Train Dominoes at the Sleeping Dog. Only one confusion: the location does NOT face Palace Street, it faces Paseo de Peralto and the driveway for parking is also off the Paseo de Peralto.

Location good but don’t recommend
The best thing to say about this property is the location is very good. Great access to the plaza and key dining experiences. The property itself is very rundown. It looks like it was furnished through multiple garage sales. Nothing matches, including towels and all the towels were very old. The rug was extremely dirty as were the floors. We had to buy cleaning supplies to clean the surfaces as a thick layers of dust everywhere. We had a serious any problem throughout the property Especially the bathroom, where there were hundreds of ants everywhere . The bedding was seriously dirty / gross with dead bugs inside as well as behind every door, etc.. We ended up leaving the property five days early and checking into a nearby hotel. We gave up almost 2k to leave early. The price for this property is completely out of whack, compared to the luxury hotels in the vicinity. Do not recommend

AMAZING LOCATION
Palace of the Sleeping Dog Uno was a great place to stay with 2-4 people and a dog. The location is fantastic! Walking distance to the square and Canyon Road. House was extremely clean upon arrival. Richard made the entire process so easy and he was incredibly responsive.

Palace of the Sleeping Dog is very nice inside
All new and clean, hardwood floors. The problem, for me, is that it is at the corner of 2 very busy streets. It’s not loud, but not the best for dogs. No screen door, no area outside for a dog at all. Other than that, wonderful! Just a misnomer for the VRBO to me!

Perfect unit in perfect location
Location, location, location! Just as in the information provided about the unit, there is no need for a car once you've arrived and been to the grocery store. Walk to the square, Canyon Road, and Railyard. Unit is pristine, and kitchen, as in all of Richard's units, is completely stocked. We have stayed here multiple times, and will continue to return. Because of incredible in-town location, there is a small level of traffic noise, but it's a small price to pay for the incredible convenience. Don't wait to book....this one will be gone.

Excellent location and accommodations
This dog friendly property offers the best location for dog and human. Walking distance to the plaza, Canyon Road, and many other wonderful shops in Santa Fe. It’s like all locations in Santa Fe, parking is a premium and driveways are tight, so it’s highly suggested not to bring a large vehicle. Nevertheless, the ability to have a fire in the fireplace, hike up to the old Fort Marcy location, a comfortable place for our dog to rest, and the ease of getting to shops, restaurants and museums, makes this one of the most wonderful places to stay in this historic city.

Great location
This is a funky, but well- appointed property. Location is great and it's furnished with the latest appliances. I found the sky light in the master bdrm extremely annoying. My biggest worry concerned the flimsy, ancient double entry doors. We had a vagrant on the porch at 2 AM. He could have easily breached the doors. For that reason, would not stay here again.

Amazing location
We've been to Santa Fe many times, and this place was by far the best location of any of the places we've stayed. Super easy walk to the plaza and easy to head out to ski, if that interests you. It's not huge, but was plenty of room for our family of four. Looks just like the photos -- lots of natural light from the skylights. There is some road noise during the day, but we were mostly gone. At night it wasn't an issue. A few small things might bump it down to 4.5 stars -- there were no linens in the kitchen. No pot holders or cup towels. Also no hand soap in the kitchen. While we didn't cook much, it seemed the kitchen had the bare minimum of pots, pans, etc. Enough to get you by but not as well stocked as other places we've stayed. The beds weren't great either. But those few small items were outweighed by the awesome location.
