The Space:
Interiors are designed along ultramodern lines emphasizing sleek steel and glass. And the downstairs living and dining area have no ceiling, creating a huge open space all the way to the second-story roof.

Big windows and glass doors admit lots of light and offer dramatic mountain, valley and ocean views. Throughout the house, light, neutral hues are offset by occasional bursts of color. And adding to the sophisticated look, most of the artwork is black-and-white photography.

Both levels feature a big terrace where you can watch the world go by. And the downstairs pool area features both lounge chairs and an outdoor dining table.

The Neighborhood:
Finca La Marcela is a mountainside neighborhood in the hills above Playa Potrero with spectacular views of the oceanscape below. You’ll feel like you can see forever, from the ocean horizon to the panorama of green hillsides.

Most homes are securely gated and have their own swimming pools. It’s a bit of an uphill drive, but the privacy is superb and wildlife in these hills is abundant.

Offering easy access to three beaches (Potrero, Penca and Prieta), this town combines upscale lodging options with the charm of a traditional Costa Rican town (think central plaza with church, school and soccer field).
There are plenty of restaurants, shops and other conveniences, and the downtown area has two mini supers (convenience stores), as well as a commercial plaza with a coffee shop, a hairdresser and other businesses.
Some of the liveliest nightlife in the region can be found at Las Brisas Bar, right on the beach, though it’s normally hopping only on Wednesdays (Ladies’ Night).
Potrero has several nice housing developments with “Villagio” in the name, popular among Italians and other expats. You can find Italian gelato shops, Costa Rican sodas (small, affordable restaurants) and hotels in a range of prices (Pitaya Lodge, Bahía La Esmeralda, Hotel Isolina, Bahía del Sol).
Just to the south of Potrero lie all the attractions of Surfside, and to the north is a beautiful, hilly drive along the ocean, ending at the Mediterranean-style village of Las Catalinas. Potrero is within easy striking distance of several beaches, and it’s a great base to explore the entire region — for a sampler of both the high-end and the humble.

Getting Around:
Our agents will be happy to assist you with renting a car, giving you the freedom to explore the area where you want, when you want. For short drives to nearby towns or beaches, golf carts are another popular mode of transportation. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around in town or beyond.

We can arrange transfers to and from the airport. Rental cars can also be delivered to your property at no additional cost, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery as our private van drives you here from the airport.

Taxis are available but can be a bit hard to find. Many locals use buses to get around, though there are a limited number of routes and times of day when you can catch them. Private shuttles can be a great option for traveling to nearby destinations, and many tour companies offer transportation to and from the tour. Stunning scenery from every square inch of this villa. We spent the entire first day trying to get over the awesomeness of the place. Howler monkeys came up the first day to check us in. Eagles came in for very close flyby every morning. In the pool throughout the day. Spectacular scene at night viewing lights of the hills and valley out to Flamingo.

Clean, beautiful and well stocked
The team was very helpful from the start. Even before our vacation, they reached out with useful information we needed about Covid travel regulations so we could prepare for our vacation. The house was clean, comfortable and stocked with everything you’ll need for a relaxing trip. We enjoyed the quality pans and ample kitchen equipment for cooking at the house. We found a good supply library of books to enjoy while relaxing by the pool and and a nice selection of movies for a family movie night. We also appreciate how easy it was to get to the beach and to the airport. We’ll definitely come again. Thank you Special Places team!

Renters Beware!! Red ants and bugs will creak k. You in your sleep, tons of red ant bites
House is on a dark dirt road, approximately 1 mile of complete darkness with pot holes, huge rocks and complete darkness swerving and sliding into bushes, huge rocks and trees. Not safe and or as described. Terrifying. Property management is unresponsive. No power for over four days. Bed bugs and hundreds of red ants all over you during sleep. Stranded on dirt road from 9pm until 5am on dirt road to home that is on top of a mountain without any help until 5am, terrifying with rabid and aggressive dog packs roaming property and road. Dozens of wild agressive dogs on prosperity and at front door. Terrifying to run from car to house and back from house to car without wild rabid dogs chasing you. House is full of insects that bite and crawl on walls, ceiling and in beds with you. Property management blew me off and stated this is normal for Costa Rica. 1 mile dirt road up mountain to house is not paved. Very dangerous and zero lighting. It’s terrifying and almost impossible for cars or compact suvs to make it up dirt road to home. Drove way is dirt and rocks. You will get stuck iim driveway and no one to help you. It’s a nightmare location and home. Not safe and We were bitten hundreds of times by insects in our sleep. Red ants everywhere inside home. People knock on door constantly asking for tours that they were émet by special places management company. Land behind home is for sale and buyers will knock indoor asking to view land that is for sale. Trip was a nightmare and we have ton of bed bug bites and red ants that devoured us in our sleep.

Beautiful home with amazing views of the ocean and surrounding hills. Location did not disappoint at all. Close to many amazing beaches and attractions. The pool was great! Master bedroom and bath were on point. Property manager was attentive, quick to respond, and respectful. I feel it was well priced. We would go back for sure. There are a few small things that can be improved upon and then it would be five stars for sure. The house lists amenities that were not included in our stay. Dishwasher, clothes dryer, and ice maker were not at the house, disappointing. Ants inside the house were an issue, but I’m sure that is something that can be easily addressed. On a side note you would definitely want a high clearance vehicle to get up the road to the house from Portrero. I would have rated it five stars if it wasn’t for the ants and missing the amenities as stated above.
