Historic manor estate near Comillas, minutes to beaches

The Palacio de Hualle is a 17th Century manor house and estate, near Comillas and the green northern coast of Cantabria.

The beautiful, large 17thC "Palacio" or villa-manor house is very elegant, and has been fully renovated to provide an unforgettable summer holiday rental. The estate includes a vast park and gardens and a lovely little chapel. The big, beautifully decorated living room with fireplace and the dining room for twelve will provide the perfect setting for a gathering of family or friends. There are six or seven bedrooms. That is: five spacious double bedrooms, plus a tower room-bedroom and an open studio- bedroom.

The spacious, light filled kitchen has just been renovated. Adjacent to the kitchen, there is a smaller dining room with a chimney. There are several terraces, balconies and patios to enjoy the lovely views of green hills and fields with horses grazing nearby. A stream flows at the edge of the property where locals sometimes fish trout.

Shops and restaurants with excellent seafood, local vegetables, meats are within walking distance from our village. Beautiful beaches are a 15 minute drive away as are the picturesque villages of Comillas, Cabezón de la Sal, San Vicente and Santillana del Mar. One can hike on an ancient Roman Road in nearby hills, climb in Picos mountains, canoe in Sella River.

The Palacio de Hualle has been featured in various country house and decorator magazines.

Located in the tiny village of Hualle, a hamlet of about 25 traditional village houses. It is extremely peaceful. Nonetheless, well stocked shops are within walking distance and big supermarkets are a three minute drive away.
Make yourself comfortable in this vacation home, which features a fireplace. There's a private balcony. A kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, an oven, and a stovetop. Complimentary wireless internet access keeps you connected, and a DVD player is provided for your entertainment.
Take in the views from a garden and make use of amenities such as barbecue grills.
Guests will find features like internet access and onsite parking.

A treasure!
This is truly a palacio of palacios. From the original wood/staircases, beautiful furniture and artwork, the lush green grass and flowers, it was amazing. It had everything we needed and more. We can’t wait to return and thank you for this unique and amazing opportunity.

Wonderful restored Palacio in Treceño set in beautiful countryside
We had a wonderful stay in Cantabria at Palacio Hualle. We enjoyed the Palacio very much with its quirky layout and enjoyed reading the book about the architect Henri Jova who restored it. Mari, the housekeeper is the true star of the show making us a delicious traditional Spanish paella which was superb! Also this was for 12 people! (La paella estaba deliciosa!) Treceño is a lovely peaceful area and the Palacio has spacious grounds with a little chapel in the grounds and donkeys in the ajacent field. The Palacio is very traditional and mixed the old with the modern well with antique furniture and with a modern well equipped kitchen with range cooker and an American style fridge/freezer. There is a small town centre in Treceño where you can get reasonably priced food, coffee and beers/wines etc. The Mercadona supermarket is a couple of kilometers away and only a few minutes drive (given the area, a car is probably a necessity for most people unless doing the trip as part of a cycling holiday) We would definately stay again!

Beautiful location and house
We loved staying in the Gatehouse. It is beautiful with a very pretty outside sitting area. Beds were comfortable, lovely bedding, lots of towels. Mari lives across the road and was extremely helpful. We have two children who loved the little play park in the village and feeding the odd carrot or apple to the horse and donkey. They also had fun playing with other children in the village who were extremely welcoming and friendly. It was only 15mins to the beach and there were lots of interesting caves and villages to visit. The gatehouse is attached to the main larger house but has a separate seating area so feels very private. The big garden area is round by the bigger house but there is plenty of space outside the gatehouse. The house had a lovely relaxing feel. A special place to visit.

amazing experience
The place is absolutely great and we have spent 2 nice weeks there: - very spacious inside - you might even be lost here :) Authentic, but comfortable to live; - big garden and cute horses coming for carrots and grass; - lovely terraces; - Mari, who comes to tidy the palace 5 days per week, is very nice and kind person (she speaks only Spanish, but despite the fact that we speak no Spanish at all, we managed to agree on everything). Mari cooks delicious food!; - communication with the owner is prompt and clear. She also took care about everything we needed for our small daughter (2 years old). The village itself is very small, but there are lots of nice villages around to spent your days. Big supermarket is 5 minutes drive. Smaller one is just 5 minutes walking distance. Ocean (with absolutely amazing beaches) is 15 minutes drive. All in all, our family recommends this place to stay. One more thank you to Mari and Margaret for a very good experience!

Stunning historic house in a lovely location
We needed a house for 10 with space for everyone to do their own thing and get together for meals or drinks or games... In a beautiful tranquil location... the Palacio fitted the bill perfectly. We liked the fact that the house is somewhat quirky, and not overly modernised. It has lots of character. However with so many stairs and slightly sloping floors it would not suit a disabled person or someone with restricted mobility. Kitchen - very well equipped with huge American style fridge & freezer. Bedrooms all a reasonable size, even the one in the tower. Only slight drawback - beds or rather mattresses need updating. The attic is fine too for a single person or two friends (sofa beds only!) The patio is lovely, great to be able eat outside together and admire the view (and watch the bats flitting to and fro in the evening). Mari, our housekeeper was wonderful, kept the place clean and tidy, and cooked a delicious meal for 10 on one evening, creating both a great meat-based dish and a veggie alternative too. All for an incredibly reasonable price. We should have booked her for two nights! The area is lush, green, and beautiful. Lots of interesting places to explore. Recommend Comilllas, El Castillo caves and Altamira caves. Would definitely recommend this house and this area for a big group.

You will never duplicate this experience.
In Spain a "palace" has to have a tower and this does, as well as 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, a nice kitchen, a huge dining room, breakfast nook and living area. If you have a need for a wedding, reunion or just a lot of friends this is the place. Near beaches and the town of San Vicente de la Banquera. Marie, does a really nice job making you feel at home. Any issues that might arise, (remember the place is a stone palace dating back hundreds of years) are taken in stride and fixed by the owner. The area of Cantabria is beautiful with terrific food almost everywhere. Both Santander and Bilbao are close enough with a car. Picos de Europa are within a hour's drive and the towns of Comillas and Santillana de Mar are within 30 minutes including the caves of Altamira. A posada serving exotic wild mushrooms and two places seving excellent coffee are within 5 minutes walk. We are grateful we had the experience of being a guest here. Not to be missed.

Fantstic Palacio de Hualle
An absolutely fantastic place! A real treasure--charming in every way. We loved it and wished we cold have stayed longer. Little walks in the village; horses and donkey waiting to greet us at the fence, interesting object's d'art throughout; great place to make day trips from; close to stores (loved the Sat. market in nearby town), friendly neighbors -- just great in every way.

Fantastic
My husband and my two children (ages 5 and 8) had an amazing albeit short stay of four days. It was a lot of house for 4 people! One quickly feels at home here-I have decided it's part of the magic. We found the house very comfortable and slept wonderfully. I would recommend earplugs as there were occasions when the neighborhood dogs went bonkers barking through the night. They are hounds and they bayed at some foxes rather incessantly (this was Mari's theory when we shared our story the following morning). We enjoyed the large yard and visiting with the 2 mother and daughter horses and donkey Enriqueta in the pasture next to the house. As an equestrienne, I would have loved to have horse riding included in the program but alas, it is not. The location, although ideal for us, may be a bit quiet for those desiring to see the "sights". We had been in Asturias/Cantabria for the previous 2 weeks so we looked forward to a relatively low key stay in Huelle. That said, the beaches and towns ( San Vicente, Comillas, etc) are nearby. The house is well appointed and we were particularly excited to have a "real" dryer. Parents of young children will understand. In order to make the most of that big field with children, I would recommend bringing a soccer ball, paddle ball set, etc as no such items are available at the house. Watch how you kick that ball as the river runs right at the edge of the property. It would have been nice to have a little path cut down so that we could explore the water. Speaking of exercise, my husband and I are runners and we ran the nearby trail into the woods, the roman trail. It is pretty but it is short (1 mile?). I tried most of the off shoots but it did not seem you could go that far. We compensated by doubling back and running on the road where there is a short path). Maybe we have to check it out again when we come back... As mentioned in previous reviews, the housekeeper Mari is a delightful person. Her stories are very funny in Spanish and still funny if you don't speak Spanish (according to my non Spanish speaking husband). Mari comes to clean the house around noon everyday for a couple hours (even if you are very neat). She really makes the place special. The owner Margaret was very responsive. I am a cook and I found the kitchen well enough supplied. We enjoyed our meals outside. Cantabria is a dream for a foodie. We hope to come back one day. It is a magical place.

The house is magnificent, the owner gracious, and Mari the caretaker truly lovely and helpful. The area is quiet and beautiful, all of the owner's suggestions about what and where to go were spot on. If I could I would return every year with family and friends and stay for a month.

Pastoral Cantabria Mansion
This is a very large House in the tiny village of Hualle, a few km from the main freeway. The house itself is clean and perfectly well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable and extended vacation, including of course all modern appliances, phone & wifi. At the same time, it's thick stone walls, huge living and dining rooms, heavy wooden doors, and touches of antique furniture and art give a wonderful feeling of living in a 17'th century mansion. We loved it. Outside are spacious gardens, beyond which are lawns with horses, a small creek to stroll by and serene mountain views. The house and estate are taken care of by a local housekeeper, Mari, who comes in daily to clean. She is extremely friendly and kind, but speaks only Spanish. The owner, Margaret, was happy to assist over the phone with translation to English when needed, and we even asked Mari to cook dinner for us once - it was nice to return home from a long day trip to the wonderful aromas of local dishes made by Mari. The location is great if you have a car. A big supermarket and various dining options are minutes away. Within a 30 minute radius are many amazing medieval towns such as Comillas and Santillana Del Mar, prehistoric caves like Altiamira, and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coast. A radius of an hour to an hour and a half will get you to Bilbao and the Guggenheim, as well as the magnificent canyons and mountains of the Picos de Europa. One comment - the electricity in the house cannot support simultaneous usage of several appliances like dryer + oven. It would probably be a good idea to upgrade it. Bottom line - this is a perfect retreat for a large family for exploring wonderful Cantabria. Thanks Margaret and Mari!

A magical multi generation family retreat
This is a beautiful and charming and expansive house that was perfect for our three generations to stay for a week. The pictures accurately represent how well maintained and well appointed the house and grounds are. We found the place even more magical than we thought it could be. Multiple outdoor spaces to lounge about. Horses on the property to watch. Every room has a comfortable chair, beautiful art, beds with lovely linens, and lots of space in the house in general. What made it most special for us was Mari. She was there from the beginning with a smile and lots of spanish(it was good practice for us). She cooked a delicious meal for us when we first arrived. And sorted babysitting on another evening. We organised a special dinner one night. And while Margaret had kindly sourced and organised having a chef come in, we realised that Mari would make us a wonderful meal and it would be more relaxed. The whole thing was delicious. We found pasteleria de pedro in cabezon de la sal for scrumptious postre for the dinner. We also found a three piece musical group who played a small concert for us. everything was really reasonable. There is a little lane to walk about 1k in pretty woods to get to the next village. Or you can walk the road. The village is full of happy and helpful people, and you can walk to the town of treceno (along the highway) where you could get what you needed - a coffee, good bread, a supermarket, and an ATM. Hualle is tucked away. It is mountainous and rural. We drove to Comillas (15-20 minutes) multiple times. It's really easy. We found awesome surf lessons on la playa de luana with Jose, right outside of cobreces. We had a delicious meal at Marinero in San Vicente de baquero. We went to an adventure park right beyond cabezon de la sal on an "off day" and the kids loved the ropes course. Thanks Margaret for a truly magical week. We hope we will be back soon!!

Estancia inolvidable
