Very good

Room was tiny - lots of stain marks on the walls / ceiling
Despite booking for B&B we were told we were room only so didn’t have breakfast - couldn’t check booking due to poor phone reception in Whitby therefore wasted money !
Room too hot and couldn’t turn radiator off
And the worst part was the lift was broke !!!
This should be in the website as we would not of booked here
Will not return to this hotel !
Unfortunately work was being done outside our room. Workmen on scaffolding so curtains closed all the time. Problems with hot water and lifts. Room and bathroom very basic
Location is wonderful. Staff friendly and helpful
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Royal Hotel where the staff were very welcoming and friendly. It has sea views an is in an excellent location. We hadn’t realised before our arrival that we needed to pre book a car parking space which meant that we had to use a roadside meter which was more expensive and less convenient than the car park. Fortunately we managed to secure a space on the hotel overspill carpark on our second day after waiting outside the carpark until someone checked out. Our room was very clean, warm and well decorated although the window was extremely high. The food was very tasty and there was an excellent choice for breakfast. It was dog friendly and although we were not able to eat in the dining room, the bar area was very comfortable and we were happy to be able to have our dog with us.

Seaside hotel
Typical slight decaying British seaside hotel. Saying that though it was clean, decent room with sea view and it had charm plus very central, decent fairly cheap parking.
curtain track and pelmet terrible. magnetic strip on shower door missing. paint missing on wall. maximum 2 star rating

Personally I wouldnt
Checking in staff very informative regarding parking. They have a poshier car park that you have to reserve and an over flow one which is on a first come basis. Currently building work going on all around so alot taken up by work vans so not in my opinion exclusive to the hotel. Is other parking available on road and car park but more expensive.
Got to room and scaffold up outside windows...no mention of this when booking or when checking in. Workmen there until late afternoon and started again at 8 in the morning...banging, swearing ..no chance of relaxing in room or having a lie in if thats what you would of wanted. Asked how long work had been going on to be told weeks...all was told was sorry...no offer of a room move..curtains had to remain shut the whole time. Room basic and dated, no adjustment on radiator so was v warm in the room. Towel rail rusty.
Breakfast there was plenty of choice and would recommend. Bar area very clean and pleasant also. For the money paid do I think its worth it - no -

Didn’t realise had to reserve parking at hotel. There appeared to be several empty spaces but told they had been taken up. Stayed in newly renovated room which was lovely. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Downside was lift which was out of action to 3rd floor which we were on, also very small and old style lift. Hotel communal areas lovely and very nice breakfast. Position of hotel lovely overlooking Abby.
Check-in OK but not advised beforehand about parking - £8 per day in street and £6 per day at hotel (limited). Arrival information said to book a breakfast slot. We tried 0830 but not available due to 3 large coach groups so tried 0800 but then were told that it was not necessary to book at that time. At 0800 we asked for a window seat but they were all reserved - but not all used. Asked for a reservation for a window seat the next morning and was told they would try but there was no reserved seating for us even though there was a window table available. At first we were told that we couldn't sit there as they were all reserved for coach drivers but we did. Clearly, priority is given to coach parties - we felt like second rate citizens even though we booked the most expensive room. Room 105 had no handle on outside of door (other rooms did) so very difficult to close. There was one small radiator in room - controlled by hotel. It was warm on the first night but cold on the second night. Had to use bedding to keep warm after a shower (no dressing gowns). Bathroom was tastefully refurbished but in need of maintenance/repair. The towel radiator auto-shut off after 2 hours. Presumably hotel is a listed building which is why windows were old, wooden single-glazed sash windows from floor to ceiling. However there can never be an excuse for black mould on windows and glass that is difficult to see through because so dirty. Maid service was poor - dirty mugs and poor replenishment.

In its heyday the Royal must have been very sought after. While comfortably and good value, the decor is tired. The bath mat was very dirty and the shower screen did not sit on the bath top so water got into the bathroom floor.
Mattress was awful, room was tired and old, had a funny weed like smell, I had to remove the hand soap bottle as the tab had not been removed. The San Miguel beer was terrible not smooth and crisp like it should be. It’s not worth £80 a night
