Description and History :
174 A Saint Philip Street, Unit 2- The John Bulow House
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula as well as in the upstate and in Mississippi.
Constructed in 1922, this Victorian building, now known as 174 A, showcases exquisite ornate trim, expansive
porches, bay windows, and a vibrant exterior color.
The high ceilings and large windows allow ample natural
light to flood the spacious interiors.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction.
Saint Philip Square :
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston. This property is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas
with amenities such as fountains, dining areas, fire pits, and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.
Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a piazza-style private porch overlooking gorgeous, landscaped gardens. With comfortable seating, it’s ideal
for a morning cup of coffee or a restful break between city adventures.
