The castle was so quirky and interesting. It was a bit tight in some areas on my mobility scooter inside, but what would you expect from a 600 yr old building! The staff were so accommodating and helpful, we cant fault them at all there is a disability lift so we could explore the 1st floor halls.. The grounds are beautiful and mostly accessible, I took one area that aas a little optimistic but most pathways and roads are smooth surfaced, we had some lovely walks after breakfast. The meals in the library were fabulous, try the Castle Club House sandwich, but get one to share its huge. The breakfasts are fabulous and offer great value and choice. Again, the staff were 1st class. We stayed in the courtyard rooms, the rooms are quaint and very quiet. Its also a brilliant base to explore the aurrpunding areas, we visited Seaham, which was so easy to negotiate on my scooter, lots of dropped kerbs, flat pavements and pedestrianised areas, it made a refreshing change. The slope from the harbour was a bit steep for my little mobility scooter, however, there is lots of parking, clean toilet facilities and a lift to enable access to the raised cafe overlooking the sea. We also visited the Botanic Gardens in Durham, these are beautiful, but access can be difficult for wheelchair and scooter users once you get beyond the cafe patio area.
We will definitely visit Lumley Castle again.
