The Hotel Ruby Marie is literally next-door to the Essen Haus but the Essen Haus is closed and going to be torn down for a new development. It was very difficult finding another restaurant in the Wilson Street area. We ended up at a McDonald's! Yuck! On the other hand, the Ruby Marie is very cool and maintained beautifully plus the included breakfast was yummy! A great place to stay as long as you don't want to go out at night.
Overnight in this historic hotel was an experience. Renovated into 15 Victorian decorated rooms & antiques throughout was definitely different than the standard highway chain hotel. If you don’t want German food nearby, there are many bars and restaurants in walking distance, as well as the beautiful capital building. Earplugs are provided for the downtown passing train which was actually very quaint. Two drinks were included for the downstairs bar. Breakfast was good. Our only issue was how overly warm the room was we couldn’t control the heat with the thermostat
Very charming & fun holiday decor in the common areas. Refreshing to be in a non-chain establishment. Property is well taken maintained, within walking distance of many shops, restaurants and other attractions. Nice amenities with happy hour and breakfast.
What a wonderful experience, this hotel was absolutely gorgeous. The unique design of the room was breathtaking. The room comes with happy hour vouchers for the Up North Bar and free breakfast from the Come Back in and is conveniently right next door to Essen Haus. Will 100 percent return.
Great location and cool old building. easy parking in front(or back) of the hotel. Nice bar and restaurant nearby(free drink at the bar and free breakfast at the restaurant).
Just be prepared for LOTS of traffic noise. They provide earplugs in the room. That should give you an indication that it is bad, but we were there on a Saturday nite.
I moved to madison in 1992 and lived there for 9 years. I always wanted to stay at the Hotel Ruby Marie. It just never happened. Finally it worked out during my latest visit. My sister and I wanted to experience the Essen Haus at least one more time. I hope to be able to stay again sometime. It was beautiful!

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities
classic hotel property that has been updated to comply with modern sensibilities. i highly recommend this hotel for stays for concerts at the Slyvee and High Noon Saloon
Interesting place to stay. Obviously a property that is focused on its place in history. If you like a property with a few challenges based on its historic significance, this place is great. If you’re looking for the chain hotel experience, pick someplace else.
This hotel is charming and comfortable! It was a perfect weekend stay with great accommodations. The hotel is joined with a breakfast cafe and a night pub, so there’s always something to do! The gas fireplace in the room really elevated the comfort! The staff is very friendly and helpful. The building has been well kept and holds a lot of history and was fun to explore! Downtown Madison was only a 12 minute walk.
