This was clearly a terrible interaction with Expedia, not the hotel...
After making the reservation our family experienced a totally unexpected & tragic death necessitating a change in our plans...we initially requested a change in the reservation:
On 5.27 "Jasmine" said Expedia was still checking our request with the hotel...
On 5/29 "Uttal S" said the hotel refused our request for the change...
On 5/30 "Zainab" wrote to say, even though we requested a change due to the death in our family, and it was refused, our original reservation was still good!
We requested a cancellation several times & received no response from Expedia...we did this BEFORE the property's cancellation deadline, a partial refund being due, & we never heard from Expedia again...
We called the property directly to cancel but were told the only way we could cancel was through Expedia!...there were no notations to be found by the customer service rep that Expedia had contacted them requesting the change; they were apologetic but said we were "stuck with Expedia"...
We reached out to them several more times before the property's cancellation deadline while juggling our family situation & never received a response back...
And that is how Expedia stole $326.65 of our money
