Querky and cute!

A very querky and cute hotel! Fun, very comfortable, memorable. Staff all around were very pleasant and professional. Valet parking gave us peace of mind for overnight parking. We ate at the restaurant omsite and while the portions were a little smaller than we thought, the food was outstanding. Would definitely stay here again.

The staff was nice, but they were clearly under staffed. My room wasn't ready at three pm. We came back at five thirty, and it still wasn't ready. The bed was awkward and it felt like you were laying downhill.

The Grand Stark isn't for everyone. First, you need to factor in that because of its location, there are many homeless people in the area. This is just the reality of a hotel in downtown Portland. Second, this is not a shiny, ultra-modern hotel. The real wood floors are uneven and a bit creaky, the bed is oddly close to the ground, and the sink is oddly located. The rooms are small but somehow feel a bit a larger than they actually are. Travelers who can put these minor issues aside will find this to be a charming hotel where everything works really well. I'm a stickler for plumbing, and the shower and drains all performed far better than those at the $300/night Hilton where I stayed recently. The internet is fast (~100Mb/s), the hot water is hot, and the elevators are roomy and reliable. As a plus, the adjacent Grand Amari restaurant is a welcome oasis of fine dining in this neighborhood. Above all, though the staff members are top notch -- friendly, helpful, and genuine. They really make you feel welcome and seem to be perfect hosts for this atypical hotel. If you can get past its imperfections, you will find the Hotel Grand Stark to be a welcoming, comfortable, and delightful place to stay.

Two nights for a work trip. The front desk attendant was AMAZING, so friendly and genuine. He rocked. But the hotel itself… less so: the front check-in area has a canvas ceiling to protect from… rain? Falling stuff? Weird. The bar/cafe is prohibitively expensive. My room was ok but had some downsides: the floor is super repurposed/old wood, which may be eco friendly but didn’t feel/look wildly clean. The shower was clean, thankfully. Since I was on a work trip, I had to use the odd little table-desk set into the back of the headboard, but it’s at an odd (low) height, and the one chair they gave was a rickety rattan diner chair… so the overall impact was slouched shoulders and numb legs from the chair’s seat. They didn’t tidy my room (the one full day I was there between the 2 nights), which also meant my little tea capsules (no coffee) weren’t replenished for the little Nespresso machine. Oh. Last note: there is a pretty significant homeless population and the external walls/windows (I was on the 3rd floor facing East) let in A LOT of noise overnight. Obviously an awful situation, but bring ear plugs if you want to sleep. Sorry :/ So, overall it was FINE but just a lot of little unfortunate drawbacks.

I don’t like leaving negative reviews, so I’ll start with the positive. The young woman who checked me in was excellent and she advised me of the nearby supermarket, Sheridan’s, which had not appeared in my Google search. I was given an upgrade, and, at first viewing, the room looked fine, if a little quirky. The wifi was good, the bed was comfortable, and the shower with the huge shower head was excellent. The location suited me, being between Burnside and Morrison bridges, an easy walk into the city. Now for the negatives. The heating didn’t work, even when set at 84 degrees, the maximum, inside was barely warmer than outside. The lighting was terrible. Very low lights in the wrong places. There was no light switch one could access from the bed. The placement of the USB ports also didn’t allow devices to be accessible from the bed, meaning setting an alarm was fraught, finding the device in a dark room to turn it off. The placement of the bathroom vanity/sink in the kitchen area just didn’t function well. There was no housekeeping during my two night stay, which would have been fine if I’d been advised about it. There was a bathrobe provided which was tatty and torn, defeating the purpose. The towels looked nice and fluffy, but were strangely non-absorbent. All in all, it looked good, but didn’t function well. The TV could only be viewed at an odd angle. All in all, I was disappointed and couldn’t in good faith recommend it.
