Saint-Tropez, international tourist capital, has become legendary and has contributed to the fame of the French Riviera.
In Saint Tropez everything is famous & celebrated.
The beaches: la Bouillabaisse, les Canbiers, les Salins, the most famous beaches of the bay of Pamplona... the Lice square where, under the plantains, games of petanque take place mixing stars of show business and local stars wearing the famous leather sandals, the 'Tropéziennnes' sipping Pastis at aperitif time.
St Topez has become St Trop since 1950, when the Parisian artistic and intellectual world, enchanted by the charm of the small harbour, descended upon St Trop for summer. Crossing the Sagan harbour, were Picasso, Prévert & many others.
The myth was heightened with the arrival of Brigitte Bardot in the 60s. Since then St Tropez has become one of the favourite places to stay and relax of all- Paris worldly and amongst international Jet Set.
The night life is very animated, many private parties take place every evening and in the luxury villas of the gulf where certain guests arrive in helicopters in order to avoid traffic jams.
In the summer, on the cafe terraces, visitor's favourite sport is to 'see and be seen'. On the harbour, the enormous yachts reign proudly, rivalling each other by their size, their cleanliness, their luggage and magnificent creatures which aboard them... in front of the curious & fascinated passers by who stroll on the docks.
Early in the morning, the place aux Herbes offers vegetables, fruit & flowers next to the yacht port where a few fishermen live and sell their fish at the market, not far from the famous brasseries 'Le Gorille' and 'Sénéquier'. A typical Provençal market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday morning on the Place des Lices. The 'Bravades' of St Tropez, religious and festive processions, are very animated. The first ones start on the 16th, 17th and 18th of May, the last takes place on the 15th June. Must visit, the museum of l'Annonciade with its collection of Paul Signac, Braque, Matisse, Utrillo, Van Dongen, Bonnard, Dufy.... and the butterfly house.
