Holiday In Tasmania
Australia’s smallest state sure has a lot to share with its visitors.
Rugged, wild, mysterious wilderness meets fascinating convict history, eye-popping modern art and indulgent shopping. Book our Tasmania accommodation for you and your BFFs and you’ll be begging to spend more time here.
History
Tasmania has a gristly and super-interesting convict history. In fact, you can find five of Australia’s eleven World Heritage-listed convict sites in this state. In the early 1800s, over 70,000 convicts were transported from their home to Tasmania, which was then called Van Diemen’s Land. Reminders of Tasmania’s convict history remain in many of Tasmania’s buildings, bridges and roads.
Things to do
There are so many places to start in Tasmania, why not begin with Hobart? This beautiful capital city will charm your socks off as you wander through the heritage buildings, cruise along the Derwent River and dine in world-class restaurants. You can sample chocolates at the Cadbury Visitor Centre and then work off the calories by strapping on your hiking boots and taking a bushwalk up Mt. Wellington. Art enthusiasts will adore the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, as well as the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), while history buffs will be thrilled by the Maritime Museum of Tasmania and Battery Point's nostalgic walking tour.
Just two and a half hours north of Hobart, you'll find Tassie's second largest city: Launceston. Launceston is a great destination for foodies, wine connoisseurs, nature lovers, culture vultures and admirers of Victorian architecture. While you're here, make sure you take a few photos of the Cataract Gorge before going on a wine tour through the Tamar River Valley. For those who prefer a good brew, head to the Boag's Centre for Beer Lovers, which has been brewing since 1881.
If a beach escape is on the cards, make a beeline for Freycinet and the East Coast, where you'll lap up the rays on the beautiful sandy shores of Coles Bay and delight in ocean fresh oysters and crayfish – yummo! A tramp through Freycinet National Park is also a must-do.
Serious bush walkers can head to the Lake St Clair National Park and stay in our Cradle Mountain accommodation for a night or two to truly soak up the atmosphere of this rugged mountain region. You'll fall in love with the glacial lakes and picturesque scenery along tracks that just happen to be some of the most popular in all of Australia. As if snuggling by the fire in a room in the mountains wasn't romantic enough – this region is also home to some of the state's finest vineyards and wineries, so make sure you purchase a bottle or two to share with your beloved while you're here.
Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair are part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area. Covering almost one of fifth of Tassie, this area has six national parks and heaps of beautiful pieces of nature: forests, beaches, caves and plains.
And then of course, there’s Tasmania’s convict history to see. Spend a day at Port Arthur for more than 30 convict buildings surrounded by green landscapes. It’s just like a trip back in time. The tours, talks and galleries will help you learn more about Tassie’s convict past.
Shopping and dining
Hobart is a supreme shopping city with boutique fashion, shopping malls like Eastlands and the famous Salamanca Market. Every Saturday, this market fills Salamanca Place with over 300 colourful stalls set up outside historic sandstone warehouses. Get some coffee or a croissant, splurge on some local fashion and listen to a busker play a tune. If you’re in Launceston, pay a visit to the shopping malls of Brisbane Street.
Tassie is Heaven if you’re a food and wine lover, with yummy fresh food and delightful wines – including pinot noir! You can dine in some gorgeous places too, like the Hobart waterfront or the bush around Cradle Mountain.
