The castle was so quirky and interesting. It was a bit tight in some areas on my mobility scooter inside, but what would you expect from a 600 yr old building! The staff were so accommodating and helpful, we cant fault them at all there is a disability lift so we could explore the 1st floor halls.. The grounds are beautiful and mostly accessible, I took one area that aas a little optimistic but most pathways and roads are smooth surfaced, we had some lovely walks after breakfast. The meals in the library were fabulous, try the Castle Club House sandwich, but get one to share its huge. The breakfasts are fabulous and offer great value and choice. Again, the staff were 1st class. We stayed in the courtyard rooms, the rooms are quaint and very quiet. Its also a brilliant base to explore the aurrpunding areas, we visited Seaham, which was so easy to negotiate on my scooter, lots of dropped kerbs, flat pavements and pedestrianised areas, it made a refreshing change. The slope from the harbour was a bit steep for my little mobility scooter, however, there is lots of parking, clean toilet facilities and a lift to enable access to the raised cafe overlooking the sea. We also visited the Botanic Gardens in Durham, these are beautiful, but access can be difficult for wheelchair and scooter users once you get beyond the cafe patio area. We will definitely visit Lumley Castle again.

We really liked the quirkiness of staying in a castle! Of course getting our bags up the stairs to our state room was difficult.

5 star comfort and service in a 4 star lodging
The bed was the most comfortable I have ever stayed in for a hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It was a unique property and good value. I recommend the courtyard staterooms as the best regular rooms. We enjoyed dinner in the restaurant it did not try breakfast this time. Call ahead if you need disabled access rooms.

It was an average hotel nothing out of the ordinary. Breakfast wasn’t too good on our first morning but better on the second day. Was expecting more and left a little disappointed

Very good. Expensive bar and restaurant, but the service and quality are high. Could do with extending the available choices for dinner in the bar, the restaurant does get booked up.

An enjoyable stay but we were disappointed that our room had no wardrobe storage at all so we had to live out of our suitcases. OK for one night perhaps but not satisfactory for a week!

A fantastically beautiful building steeped in history. Set in a quiet location. A great room on the courtyard outside the main castle. The food was excellent, both evening and breakfast. All the staff were welcoming and very professional. A very enjoyable stay.

Historic castle accommodation
Fantastic, authentic castle with such history and higgledy piggledy corridors. It was our anniversary and we were welcomed with an anniversary card which was a nice touch. The staff were excellent. We only had breakfast which was delicious and staff were efficient and friendly. The food in the library looked good. We had a courtyard room and were very happy with it. If you're expecting modern, corporate decor it might not be for you but we liked it and so nice to stay in a castle with character.

Wonderful architecture
The exterior of hotel was really grand with some stunning architecture. As this is a castle i was suprised at the detail right down to the richard the 3rd in my bathroom, clearly no expense spared. Breakfast was a grand affair right down to the back chat for missing my time slot. Warning dont you dare over sleep. The bed was comfy and welcoming more so than the staff.

Excellent Value Treat.
Room and breakfast were a bargain, dinner quite pricey but very good, overall value excellent for a stay in such an historic building. I've marked it down, perhaps unkindly, on eco-friendliness given it would probably be impossible to double-glaze (etc) a Grade 1 14th century castle, but the heated towel rail was hard-wired and had no obvious off-switch, which I felt unnecessary and made the bathroom rather hot on a summer's night. Nice to have an open window in the bedroom though. The place must cost a fortune to run. Very pleasant staff, good breakfast choice, very handy for the cricket ground.

Great sense of history of a real castle. Limited times for dining available and had to have breakfast really late when some food options had run out.
