Breakfast is mediocre at best. Need to park in an expensive parking ramp and must carry luggage a few blocks as there is no street access to the hotel. It was nice to walk the promenade with many restaurants, Noise from the pubs nearby was a little loud.
The hotel is very centrally located, just yards from the centre of Aix-en-Provence. The room was spacious and well-appointed, as was the bathroom. We didn't have the hotel's breakfast as there were plenty of other options on our doorstep. We'd be very happy to stay there again.
Shower stall leaked water all over the bathroom floor. The biggest complaint is the noise level in the room at night. There are restaurants and bars outside the front of the hotel and our room faced those restaurants/bars. We can hear people singing/shouting well into 2 AM.
Otherwise, the hotel is very clean and located close to underground parking (also very easy to drive into/out of Aix-en-Provence).
We couldn’t continue trying to sleep at
The Hotel de France because of jackhammering at the bottom of our room until 2:00 in the morning.
We had to go to another hotel because of the construction noise. They should have told us about the street repair.
A week before, people at the hotel had to be evacuated due to a water pipe burst.
The taxi driver who drove us there was surprised that Hotel de France was reopened while the hotel next to it was still closed.
This was all over the news. The hotel should have warned us about the repair work going on at night but they did not.
So we had to pay for 2 hotels instead of one. We expect some compensation.
First they gave us a room that wasn’t even cleaned from previous occupants, then they changed it to a room with broken air conditioner, we spent terrible night with temperature outside of 27 degrees was not possible to open the windows. We planned to stay in this hotel for 3 nights but left before that. Only one positive thing was location
This was in the heart of the old part of town, which was perfect but noisy. Everything was wonderful except the noise level from the street. This went on until 1-2am. Room 300 is just above the fray. If you want to sleep, ask for different room.
Pros: Location! Right in the heart of Aix centre. And, there is an elevator & continental breakfast is included.
Cons: Air conditioners barely worked. The coolest temperature was 28 Celsius / 82.4 Fahrenheit. This was the 1st room that I was assigned. I was able to switch rooms but 2nd room was only slightly cooler 25 Celsius / 77 Fahrenheit. No option to increase fan speed from low. Thankfuly I brought a handheld portable fan so at least i could have air circulation.
The young lady at the front desk could not have been any more kind. She gave amazing restaurant recommendations and flagged that we were headed to the wrong Provence train station, saving us time and a lot of delays.
Location was in the middle city with lots of nightlife in the area. Walkable to the city attractions.
We were allowed check in an hour early which was great but on check in they asked for a credit card and put a €200 hold on the card in case we “broke anything” absolutely ridiculous considering the room was so basic. No where on the hotels.com booking site or the hotels site did it mention this charge. Hotel very central but only a reception desk with tiny lobby and no bar. Perfect location right in center but a musky smell in the room and the view from bedroom window very dirty with cigarette butts thrown around. This courtyard view could be a lovely feature but just looked dirty and uncared for. I was told the €200 hold should be put back on my card in 2 days.
I found that the picture used in the confirmation email was misleading as it is from a room in a different category than what we booked. The staff was great in upgrading us after i noted that our room (#403) was not as described and more importantly smelled mold terribly. The second room (#100) was much nicer except for the floor caving in on one side of the bed, which felt like we were going to go through the floor. We manage to avoid it and all went well for our 2 night stay. The breakfast was very diverse and plentiful. The staff was super professional and nice.
