The local people, in Basauri, where unfailingly welcoming and very proud to consider themselves Basque rather than Spanish.
It's a working class suburb of Bilbao, and doesnt get many tourists, but it's all the better for that. Lots of small bars, frequented by locals of all ages, and tapas aplenty, all at really reasonable prices for UK tourists used to high Eurozone costs.
Its also really easy to get the tube in to Bilbao for the day, only 20 mins journey time, and a really clean, well managed, railway system.
Biggest impression from my trip? How freindly and welcoming the local Basque population are.
