Go with a better option than here
Reception is only open 15:00-20:00 so if you need anything or have questions before or after these times, you cannot reach anyone. Check out is at 11:00. Since no one is available at the desk, you cannot check out manually if you prefer to settle charges and have a receipt in your hand before you leave. You must drop your keys in a box and hope they do not mess up your bill. The customer service is non existent, and the rooms are very basic. Cleanliness was good, and the breakfast was normal for a European breakfast. The view from the dining facility on the 19th floor is lovely. The morning staff was friendly, unlike the front desk reception staff who are cold and robotic, lacking any hospitality customer service training. Overall, there's a sinister energy about this place, so we would not choose to stay here again.

The carpet is very old and stained, very friendly staff, internet was working during one day, breakfast was modest, the bread was dry and the eggs sunny side up was cold during the first day. Next time I will look for another hotel

A breath of fresh Bavarian air
Spent one night in the hotel before I meet with my family. Certain amount of old world charm in the town. Difficult time on a Sunday, since many businesses are closed. If you have a free night spend, Idar-Oberstein, do it, it allows you to relax. Just a great place to collect your thoughts and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Not a pretty building but our room on the 12th floor was spacious and the view was amazing. Breakfast on the 19th floor was not so good. The hotel caters for coach loads of visitors especially from China and one party got to breakfast before us - nothing left, we had to wait for bread and eggs to be cooked.

Opal Hotel matches its name!
good room, though a bit dated, very good breakfast buffet and right in the center of the Idar part of Idar-Overstein, next to lots of gem stone dealers and jewellers. lots of restaurants in 1-5 min walking distance (nearest is approx 50 m away) Stayed there for the 2nd time as location and facilities so good for a business trip in matters of gemstones.

staff could use some improvement
Opal is a decent hotel, and was satisfactory in comfort, cleanliness and location. One slight problem I had was with the front desk. As my party left 10 minutes before me, they left instructions with the front desk for me to collect. When I arrived 10 minutes later at 11 am, I found no one at the front desk. I waited, ringing the bell for 15 minutes as people came and went from the hotel lobby. There was no sign or indication when the staff might return. Additionally, I was later given incorrect directions to a local shop. I was not impressed with the quality of the staff.

OK if you are not fussy !!
The hotel is part of an ugly 20 storey building and does not fit in with surrounding buildings. The rooms were in need of a modernisation and good re-vamp. The water in the toilet was yellow however many times you flushed it. The breakfast was in a room more like a school dining room, clean but looking like something out of the 60'S

Hotel needs renovating
The hotel is in much need of some renovations. I've never been to a hotel where they didn't have an outlet close to the bed or night stand. The configuration of the rooms were just strange. The water pressure in the bathroom was aweful, it took me forever to wash my hair. Another thing is that the tiles in the bathroom needed a good scrubbing, not impressed. The breakfast was okay, nothing to rave about. The location was okay. There were restaurants very close to the hotel. However the hotel is a good walk (approx 30min) from the city centre. Lastly, the staff were very kind and always willing to help.

Great Idar Hotel
We enjoy staying at the Opal each year. It is in the center of Idar with a beautiful view front and back rooms. Breakfast on top floor with even a better view. Breakfast not the biggest variety but plenty. Great coffee as well. Thank you Opal.
