Escape the city for a romantic winter getaway or a weekend with family/friends at this historic 3 bedroom mountaintop cottage in the famed artists colony of Cragsmoor. The house sits atop a dramatic cliff and has decks on both floors--including a new cedar hot tub!--with stunning views of 50+ miles of the Catskills Mountains, Minnewaska State Park and the Shawangunk Ridge. Less than 1.5 hours from NYC.
I fell in love with this house the moment I set foot inside, and I hope you do too. The wood-walled interior includes a book-lined living room w fireplace, 3 bedrooms (2 queen & 1 full), one full bath with a shower and claw-foot tub, and an ensuite half-bath. It's on the National Historic List, and has the perfect mix of old-world enchantment (Dutch doors, wall sconces, tin ceiling in kitchen, wood-burning fireplace stove, built-in bookcases) and stylish modern flourishes (Italian tile bathroom, leather Eames-style chair, super comfy deck-loungers), along with all the requisite necessities, including speedy Wi-Fi, washer/dryer, new dishwasher, Blue-tooth compatible record player, wireless printer, hair-dryer, etc. And the water is great to drink (no sulfer!).
Speaking of water...you can now enjoy a brand new cedar wood barrel-style hot tub with stunning views of 50+ miles of the Catskills mountain range. The water is well-fed and super-clean, and kept at soaking temperature (103 degrees) all fall, winter, and spring. It's a perfect way to start your day in the morning, or end it under the stars.
The house is private and wooded, though not off in the boonies. It has a lovely yard, a newly-graveled circular driveway, and a powerful full-house Generac 22kw generator that starts up automatically should the power go out in a storm.
Also: No TV (but aren't you trying to get away from all that?).
And finally, a little history: Kaatsview is a century-old artists cottage in the historic Catskills hamlet of Cragsmoor, New York. Founded in the 1870s by renowned landscape painters of the Hudson River School, Cragsmoor has thrived as a mountaintop idyll for creative types and nature-loving vacationers ever since. Many of the original painters homes still exist today, and have come to form the backbone of the hamlet’s rich architectural tradition. The cottage was once the summer home of Julia Polk Hunsicker, an early-century artist and model whose likeness graces the works of Cragsmoor’s most celebrated painters, including Charles Curran, Helen Turner, George Innis, Jr., and Frederick Dellenbaugh.
