We booked the hotel because we are travelling. We woke up to a text message sent at 11:00PM the night before telling us the pool & hot tub aren't working. There was kleenex on the floor of the room and hair on the floor of the bathroom. When we went down for breakfast there was no hot food as the grocery order hadn't come in and the waffle maker wasn't working. The shower pressure was virtually no existent. My wife had to wait until we got to the next stop to get the soap out of her hair. Then they couldn't check out because of a problem with their server. Definitely not worth the price!

The person who greeted us was more intent on speaking around their cup of coffee than checking us in. They mumbled in between sips and offered no helpful instructions unless directly asked. It was like we interrupted their coffee time. We’ve been travelling for three weeks so far, this is the first time we’ve encountered such unprofessional behaviour. The main reason we booked with this hotel was for the pool in which we were informed was “down for maintenance “ Will not be staying at another of these chain of hotels.

Clean newer hotel near the highway.
This is a newer hotel very closer to the highway. The room was clean but the beds were a little uncomfortable. The breakfast was superb!

In general, I do not like giving negative reviews about properties... but I will make an exception in this case. We stayed at the Microtel Portage la Prairie twice, once on our way to BC from Ontario and again on the way back. On the way out, we had no issues. However, on the way home, at 6pm on the day of our stay, I received a call from the hotel stating that the room I had reserved (and confirmed) two months prior was no longer available. I received no explanation, other than the hotel was "short staffed". I asked if there were any other options and was told that we could be offered a smaller room with fewer amenities on a higher floor. I was also told there would be a $40 reduction in the cost of the room, relative the original fee. After 10 hours on the road and another hour before arriving at the hotel we had few other options, so I accepted the offer - it had the basics of what we needed. However, upon check-out the next morning, I was told there was no record of our room change by the hotel or of the $40 discount for the inconvenience. In fact, I was told that $40 was "excessive" and I would only be provided a $20 discount. Unless there is a health or safety issue with a room, no traveller should be told at 6pm on the night of their stay that the room they reserved months earlier is not available. A reservation is like a contract. Worse is the fact that the terms of the alternative arrangement were not honoured. I cannot recommend this hotel to others.
