I travelled to Porto with my 10 year old son for our very first holiday abroad together. I was therefore a little apprehensive about whether it would meet our expectations, and that we would feel safe and comfortable.
I can honestly say that staying with the amazing owners of Casa Velha Guesthouse made our trip that much better. They were warm, engaging, friendly, generous with their time and knowledge, gave me so much advise and tips on where to go and what to do in the city.
Our room was beautiful, clean and quiet. The house is lovely - a real traditional treat. The bathroom was spotless and beautifully designed (and has a shower you never want to leave.) Fresh fluffy towels were provided everyday and our bed was big and comfortable.
As both the owners are busy, you can come ands go during the day without feeling overwhelmed or intrusive - it really feels like your own private haven. But they were also always there to greet us in the evening.
The guesthouse is located just five minutes walk away from the metro station, and the frequent trains means you can get into the city centre quickly. But this is also a very peaceful area. It's authentic - a working residential street, and so if you want to feel part of the community and get away from the tourists this is great.
