Sketchy area, but felt safe.
We got a free upgrade which was cool.
English was hard to understand from all staff we interacted with.
The room was brand new, but there was a lack of towels in the room for two people, the shower did leak, but they seemed like they were going to rectify the issue right away.
The property was well cared for and looked upscale. Unfortunately Thunder Bay has promoted drugs for drug users and the neighborhood, although close to the water which is lovely, is heavily used by these people. I was uncomfortable any time we were outside of the property.
The rooms are updated and nice. It's an older hotel and there's not much to look at on the outside. This area of town is older and I wouldn't walk the neighborhood at night, but it was a convenient and comfortable stay for our hikes and nearby amethyst mines.
Very newly renovated room that I stayed in - maybe all are. Plenty of parking across the street (free) and behind bldg. Perfect for business travel or if you want to be somewhat close to the downtown area...
Clean and nice! Staff was so friendly and helpful and breakfast each day was outstanding. Lots of choices. Huge difference between here and other hotels. Raelene from the cleaning staff helped me get rid of trash that I had and refreshed the towels for me as I did not ask for service daily. Great place in Thunder Bay. Within driving distance of restaurants.
This facility was a little too "uptown" for us. Still, it was a pleasant experience overall. There were 2 drawbacks in our stay. The back parking area is cramped and overcrowded and we were "parked in" at our available handicapped parking spot. Thankfully, by the time we were ready to leave, enough other customers had already left to allow us to get out of the parking spot with a little maneuvering. Also, the cooking smells from the available breakfast filtered into the rooms. I did not appreciate that at all.

The hotel is somewhat renovated and updated. It was clean (thank you housekeeping staff!)
The room we got was spacious and had a couple od chairs with a table.
The AC worked great.
The bed was not comfortable at all - sore backs in the morning - and the pillows were kind of like cardboard wrapped in paper towel.
It was a noisy stay inside the hotel. We heard people in the hallways until 2/3am, could hear neighboring rooms TV and conversations and bathrooms.
The worst part is the location. Several inebriated people / possibly drug use asked us for money and a ride when we were parking at the hotel. The area is very loud at night. Sirens, altercations outside the building etc.

Neighborhood is pretty sketchy, but my car was safe.

Sometimes reviews write themselves. I have never had such mixed feelings about writing this review.
Clearly, the owners of the property have spent a LOT of money trying to refurbish and modernize the hotel. There is new decor, new furniture and more modern amenities like increased power outlets and USB chargers. There is an included breakfast in a brightened breakfast area which was quite decent.
What they have not been able to change (so far at least) is the underlying flaws of a very old hotel. (The terrazzo floors and ancient elevator puts the building at least 60-70 years old!) The third floor hallway absolutely smells foul. The bathroom, although with new fixtures, would be considered small on any older cruise ship. Accessibility for anyone in a wheelchair or walker would be an issue.
One thing they can’t renovate is the location. Definitely a more sketchy area of Thunder Bay. I arrived around midnight and the area was very poorly lit. The parking lot was eerie. Not a place for late evening summer strolls!

There were several questionable people surrounding there parking lot. The area around did not feel safe. The hotel itself was nice but the rooms were very small and felt like we did not get value for our stay. They had no vending machines for drinks only behind the front desk. When we went to purchase water they didn’t have any cold water or any cold drinks at all. We will not be staying at this location again.
