Staying at the Red Caboose Hotel is a wonderful experience for kids of all ages - at 63, I'm a kid at heart and I thoroughly enjoyed the time there with my wife!
The conversion from an antique caboose (the real thing) to a small motel room was well done. Travelers should know that this is not a motel room that is made to look like a caboose, though. Most aspects of the "room" are small. It has a slight tilt and there are other imperfections.
Check-in was fast and friendly. The AC, cable tv and wifi worked perfectly. The room was well insulated from outside sounds, heat and cold. There was a heavy wind and rain storm while we were there...no leaks and the "porch" served us well.
The location is in the country, but there is an on-site restaurant that serves family friendly meals. Other dining and shopping options are just a few minutes drive from the site.
The Strasburg Railroad passes right by the Red Caboose Hotel. Seeing and hearing it, from noon until five was exciting. We shopped at two antique stores and visited two small breweries (that served meals) in the town.
I would recommend this to anyone that has an appreciation for adventure. If you are finicky or have other priorities, there are many chain hotel options in the Lancaster area.
For me, the Red Caboose Hotel was just right!
